Maine July 2015
Sailing and Sustainability in Maine
Course Dates: July 18—August 8, 2015
Sustainability has blossomed in Maine. Organic agriculture, high perforce building, renewable energy, and an ethic of care of the earth are becoming part of the fabric of life in Maine.
We’ll look at the historical roots of the modern sustainability movement in Maine, visit (by boat) the Good Life Center, the homestead built by Helen and Scott Nearing that launched the homesteading movement in the 1970’s.
We’ll visit organizations like the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association that have made Maine a leader in the sustainable agriculture movement, meet young farmers and entrepreneurs that are creating the next generation of sustainability, with Maine in many ways leading the nation.
We’ll visit renewable energy projects and explore the controversy around a wind farm on an island, a new generation of farm to table restaurants, explore the role that food coops and farmers markets have in developing a new food system, and see food entrepreneurs who are on the leading edge of creating this new food system.
