Looking for a way to celebrate International Women’s Day while giving back to the community? Join MIU’s Wise Women Lead club for a week of events to benefit local area refugees.

International Women’s Day is a global holiday dedicated to celebrating the “social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.” Although the day is focused mostly on celebration, the official website points out that we should also be aware that “progress has slowed in many places across the world, so urgent action is needed to accelerate gender parity.” MIU’s Wise Women Lead club has organized a series of events that will celebrate women while also bringing international women’s issues to light.

This series of events will include:

  • Wise Women Speak,” a night of poetry, music, comedy, and more at on March 8th at the Orpheum Theater
  • A screening of “It’s a Girl!” on March 12th at 7:30 pm in the MIU Student Lounge
  • A speech by Gabriela Rodil titled “Men and Women Standing for Equality-A Roadmap” on March 14th at 7:30 pm at the Fairfield Public Library
  • A series of volunteer “crafternoons” to create needed supplies for female refugees in Iowa

“Wise Women Speak” will feature performances from Tamara Day, Conner Carey, Amine Kouider, Santoria Rush and many more of your Fairfield favorites! Best of all, all money raised at the event will be donated to benefit local Iowa refugees. “It’s a Girl!” examines the social stigma that women experience from birth onwards in many countries. Details on Gabriela Rodil’s speech are upcoming.

Ticket for “Wise Women Speak” are $10 for the general public and $8 for students, and can be purchased at the door or from a club member ahead of time. The other two events are free, but donations will be gladly accepted and will benefit local refugees.

These events have been made possible by Wise Women Lead, United Nations Association Fairfield, Soapbox Speakeasy, and Green Iowa AmeriCorps. Stay tuned for more exciting event announcements throughout the week!
