Ayurveda is an ancient system of holistic healing that has been practiced in India for thousands of years. This Maharishi Ayurveda herb course is a comprehensive exploration of this powerful practice, focusing on the best herbs for diseases affecting each system of the body.

Ayurveda considers the body as a whole, and believes in treating the root cause of disease rather than just the symptoms. In this course, you will learn about the unique properties of various herbs and how they can be used to balance the doshas (body energies) and promote overall health and well-being.

From herbs that support digestion to those that boost immunity, each herb has specific benefits for different parts of the body.   1. Dr. Keith Wallace and Carol Paredes with give an introduction to Maharishi Ayurveda herbs, with a basic understand of Dravyaguna.
  2. Dr. Paul Morehead will talk about herbs for cardiovascular systems and for longevity.
  3. Vaidya Amandeep Kaur Negi will talk about herbs to treat diabetes.
  4. Dr. Marc Edwards will talk about herbs to treat stress disorders.
  5. Vaidya Sanjeev Karla will talk about herbs to treat mental health and disorders of the nervous system.
  6. Vaidya Anita Misra will talk about herbs to treat disorders of the digestive system.
  7. Dr. Sankari Wegman will talk about herbs to treat disorders of the respiratory system.
  8. Dr. Charles Elder will talk about herbs to treat disorders of the endocrine system.
  9. Dr. Charlotte Beck will talk about herbs to treat disorders of the skin, as well as the use of aromatherapy.
  10. Andrew Stenberg will talk about Maharishi Ayurveda pulse diagnosis and the best herbs for prevention.
  11. Dr. Supriya Gowrishankar will talk about herbs to improve woman’s health.

Faculty and Guest Speakers

Dr. Robert Keith Wallace, PhD

Robert Keith Wallace, PhD

Dr. Robert Keith Wallace received his PhD from University of California Los Angeles and did postdoctoral research at Harvard. He was the founding President of Maharishi International University and is a member of the Board of Trustees of MIU as well as Chairman of the Department of Physiology and Health. He has written and co-authored many books, including 16 Super Biohacks for Longevity, The Neurophysiology of Enlightenment, Dharma Parenting, The Rest and Repair Diet and more. Professor Wallace completed pioneering research on the Transcendental Meditation technique and a fourth major state of consciousness which was published in Science, American Journal of Physiology, and Scientific American, and has traveled around the world giving many lectures at major universities and institutes.

Dr. Paul Morehead

Paul Morehead, PhD

Dr. Paul Morehead is the Associate Dean of the College of Integrative Medicine and Director of the MS in Maharishi AyurVeda & Integrative Medicine. He is an educator and practitioner of Maharishi AyurVeda. Dr. Morehead helped develop the undergraduate programs in physiology and health at MIU and taught many of the courses, including Self-Pulse Reading, Maharishi Yoga Asanas, Diet Digestion and Nutrition, Prevention, Human Physiology and Veda in Human Physiology. After completing his PhD in Physiology, Dr. Morehead began developing the MS in Maharishi AyurVeda in Integrative Medicine, working with founding MIU faculty and leading Ayurvedic physicians from India. This online Masters is the only accredited Master’s degree in Ayurveda in the US. This groundbreaking masters degree program is pioneering the integration of AyurVeda with integrative medicine, including modern medicine, Chinese Medicine, Osteopathy, Homeopathy and Chiropractic Medicine.

Dr Charlotte Bech

Charlotte Bech, MD

Dr. Charlotte Bech graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Copenhagen. She has worked in gastrointestinal surgery, hematology, and internal medicine/obstetrics. Dr. Bech has taught at a medical school in Copenhagen and is currently running a private clinic there, supplementing modern medicine with Maharishi AyurVeda. She has given more than 30,000 Ayurvedic consultations. Charlotte writes as a columnist in several national magazines and is the author of several books on topics of Ayurveda. She is Vice-President for the European Ayurveda Medical Association (EURAMA) and has been awarded the Panacea International Excellence award from Vanaushadhi Vidyapeetha, International Conference on Ayurveda and Holistic Healing, from the Government of Maharastra, India. Dr. Bech is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Physiology & Health at MIU.

Vaidya Amandeep Kaur Negi

Vaidya Amandeep Kaur Negi, BAMS, MHS

Vaidya Amandeep Kaur Negi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Physiology and Health at MIU, currently working as an Ayurveda Physician at the Integrative Wellness Center and teaches Maharishi AyurVeda in the Department of Physiology and Health. She has also given lectures, training sessions, and seminars promoting Ayurveda to residential societies, corporations, and schools in India, and providing the public with basic Ayurvedic lifestyle recommendations and Ayurvedic management of diseases. She has been practicing Maharishi AyurVeda since 2017 and has been a visiting Ayurveda Physician in many Ayurvedic clinics in India, Europe, and the USA. Vaidya Amandeep’s mission in life is to spread Ayurvedic wisdom around the world.

Andrew Stenberg

Andrew Stenberg

Andrew Stenberg has more than 20 years’ experience performing 11,000 Ayurveda consultations. He also has teaching experience as a senior lecturer at Maharishi Vedic College in Melbourne, Australia. Andrew has many years of experience teaching self-pulse reading, and his courses are known for their depth and informal approach. Andrew will train students in Maharishi AyurVeda Pulse Diagnosis.

Dr Marc Edwards

Marc Edwards, MD

Dr. Marc Edwards is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Physiology and Health at MIU. Dr. Edwards earned his MD degree from the University of Colorado, trained in Family Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and later completed an MBA at the University of Connecticut. 30 years of his career was focused on healthcare management and consulting including service as the senior physician executive in both community and university teaching hospitals. He operated a federal Patient Safety Organization which conducted healthcare management research to help physician leaders improve quality and safety. Dr. Edwards has also studied and practiced Maharishi Ayurveda since 1984 as an outgrowth of his practice of Transcendental Meditation. In 2017, he relocated to North Carolina from Connecticut. He now lives in Chapel Hill and contributes as adjunct faculty to the Integrative Medicine program at the University of North Carolina.

Vaidya Sanjeev Karla

Vaidya Sanjeev Karla, BAMS, MS

Vaidya Sanjeev Karla is the Clinical Training Director of the BA in AyurVeda Wellness and Integrative Health, and an Assistant Professor of Physiology and Health. Sanjeev Kalra is a well known Maharishi Ayurveda specialist with expertise in Ayurvedic Neuropsychiatry. He earned his MD (Doctor of Medicine) in Ayurveda from one of the world’s leading Ayurveda Medical Institute, SDM College of Ayurveda and Hospital Hassan. The MD degree is conferred to the BAMS doctors who have studied 5 and 1/2 years in modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda after completing their specialized postgraduate dissertation, with 3 years of full clinical training in India.He is a leading Ayurvedic physician and holds over 16 years of clinical, academic and administrative experience. He has worked with top hospitals in India and served as the Senior Consultant at the Maharishi Ayurveda Hospital in New Delhi prior to joining MIU. He has taught Ayurveda in various Ayurvedic medical colleges and also served as the Senior Administrator. He has been associated with the Greek Institute of Ayurveda, taught Nadi Vigyan and has seen patients from all over the world.

Vaidya Anita Misra

Vaidya Anita Misra, BAMS, MS

Vaidya Anita Misra is the chief consultant for the Doshi Center for Integrative Medicine in Los Angeles and Adjunct Professor of Physiology and Health at MIU. She is the founder and director of the Nature Natural Ayurvedic Life-Care Wellness and Panchakarma Center in Bhubaneswar, India. She also has a line of organic products comprising herbs, oils, spices, cereals. Anita completed her Bachelor in Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery in India and her Master’s in Integrative Medicine in the United States. She has been a sincere advocate of TM and yoga because on the level of consciousness, we are all one and our inherent potential is supreme health.

Dr Sankari Wegman

Sankari Wegman, PhD

Dr. Sankari Wegman Sankari has been a part of “The Raj” team of experts since 2003. Her extensive knowledge and experience in Ayurvedic Pulse Assessment provides a base for offering a personalalized wellness routine that encompasses Ayurvedic treatments, herbal supplements, diet and lifestyle recommendations. Sankari completed her PhD in Maharishi Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine and has been a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation program for 18 years. She is on the Board of Trustees at the Maharishi School and gives lectures on Ayurveda at universities and high schools throughout the country.

Dr Charles Elder

Dr Charles Elder, MD, MPH, FACP

Dr Charles Elder is Executive Director of the Fellowship for Medical Professionals: Master of Science in Integrative Medicine and AyurVeda, Associate Professor of Physiology and Health. He received his MD and MPH degrees from Boston University School of Medicine, and completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Michigan hospitals. He has served as a primary care internist at Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW) for 28 years, and has been the physician lead for the complementary and integrative medicine program at KPNW for 20 years. In this capacity, Dr. Elder offers a referral based integrative ayurvedic clinic for Kaiser patients, advising patients in the areas of diet, exercise, herbal medicine, mind-body practices, and other complementary medicine modalities. Dr. Edler also has a clinical faculty appointment at Oregon Health and Science University, and for over 2 decades has mentored and taught residents and students in both internal and integrative medicine settings.

Vaidya Prathmesh Vyas

Saipriya Gowrishankar, MD

Dr Saipriya Gowrishankar has over 20 years of experience as a medical doctor, both in India and in the US and has worked in primary care and prenatal and postpartum maternity care. Recently she worked on research focusing on preventing cardiovascular events in the elderly population with kidney dysfunction. This project received national recognition as a presentation at the American College of Physicians national meeting and the Society of General Internal Medicine national conference. Dr. Saipriya is a graduate of MS in Maharishi Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine and is a member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association and is also a certified Bach flower therapist.

Carol Paredes

Carol Paredes, MS

Carol Paredes is the Associate Chair of the Department of Physiology & Health and Instructor of Physiology and Health. She is an integrative health coach, yoga teacher, and educator. She became a certified health coach after working more than 30 years in technology as a senior level engineer. Now she is responsible for managing the operations of the Department of Physiology and Health and assists in the development of the curriculum for the MS in Maharishi AyurVeda & Integrative Medicine and the MS in Aromatherapy and Ayurveda in addition to working on her PhD in Physiology in Health. Carol has a passion for helping clients, students, and staff integrate and benefit from the knowledge and practices of Maharishi AyurVeda.
