At the Lean Accounting Summit on August 25-26, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Andrew Bargerstock, head of the MIU Accounting department, will facilitate a 60-minute breakout session on the topic “Are We Leaning Away from Standard Costing?”

Dr. Bargerstock reflects on speaking at this event by referring to recent conversations with the CEO of, consulting firm, Lean Frontiers. “Jim Huntzinger [the Founder of the Lean Summit] has been intrigued by MIU’s research in lean accounting practices for manufacturing companies,” says Bargerstock. “We conducted the first empirical study that revealed an inconsistency between lean accounting theory and practice related to the usefulness of a traditional production control system known as standard costing.  At this conference, we want to engage practitioners in dialogues about why they are holding onto standard costing even though it appears to be a wasteful practice in mature lean manufacturing.”

This annual conference draws attendance from accounting executives, consultants, and researchers who work with companies that have adopted Toyota-style process improvement methods (a.k.a., kaizen). The Lean Summit has produced several awards for MIU over recent years.  Dr. Bargerstock was the Excellence in Lean Accounting Professor for 2009.  Two Management Ph.D. students (Manjunath Rao and Ye Shi) earned recognition as Lean Accounting Students of the Year in 2011 and 2013, respectively.  Based on Rao’s Ph.D. dissertation, he and Dr. Bargerstock published two peer reviewed articles in the Institute for Management Accountant’s journal, Management Accounting Quarterly, in 2011 and 2013.

The most recent request to have Dr. Bargerstock as a speaker continues to build MIU’s reputation as one of the leading universities in promoting thought development and research in lean accounting.
