What is Maharishi Vedic Science?

Maharishi Vedic Science has its source in the ancient Vedic tradition of India. The term “Vedic” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Veda,” which means “knowledge.”

Maharishi Vedic Science brings together this ancient Vedic tradition of knowledge and the discoveries of modern science to answer fundamental questions about life.

When you study Maharishi Vedic Science, you’ll explore the nature of your own inner self and how it relates to the wider world. You’ll also learn how this knowledge can be applied to practical situations to make the world a more peaceful place.

Specializations

Students in the MA in Maharishi Vedic Science listed above may add a specialization to their degree by completing additional coursework in one of the following areas:

Requires 18-36 credits of coursework in classes that were not taken for the MA in MVS or have been significantly reformulated with new books and materials since they were taken or MVS 520: Advanced Studies in Maharishi Vedic Science.
Requires 18-36 credits of graduate courses in Physiology and Health.

Requires 18-36 credits of coursework selected from the following:

  • MVS 525: Sanskrit and Maharishi Vedic Science
  • MVS 526: Sanskrit
  • MVS 527: Advanced Sanskrit
  • MVS 534: Readings in Vedic Literature
Requires 18-36 credits of graduate courses in Gandharva Veda.
Students expand, apply, and express their growing knowledge of Maharishi Vedic Science in professional settings. The Practicum Specialization may be taken concurrently with the evening/weekend program schedule of study, or they may be taken after some or all of the MA coursework in the day program schedule has been completed.
Requires 18-36 credits of MVS 580: Practicum in Maharishi Vedic Technologies.
Requires 18-36 credits of MVS 581: Applied Research in Maharishi Vedic Science.
Requires MVS 490: Transcendental Meditation Technique Teacher Training
(Students who have successfully completed the TM Teacher Training course before they take the MA courses will automatically graduate with a specialization in TM Teacher Training)

Rotating university to India

Do you want to experience Vedic culture firsthand as part of your degree program?

Our 6-credit Rotating University course travels to 20 cities, from the southern tip of India to the foothills of the Himalayas. You’ll explore ancient sites sacred to Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists, along with temples, beaches, the Taj Mahal, the Ganges River, Sarnath, Guru Dev’s Ashram and more.

You’ll also spend a week at the Brahmasthan Campus in the center of India, where you’ll enjoy deep meditations and Maharishi Vedic Pandit recitations.

This trip takes place January 15-February 21, 2018.

Online program

In our three-year online MA in Maharishi Vedic Science, you will learn about the deepest level of reality through the perspectives of ancient Vedic wisdom and modern science while studying from the comfort of your own home.

Our online courses allow you to work from home on your own schedule while still gaining the benefit of supportive teachers and an online community.

Evening/weekend MA option

Intern option

If you are an international student in need of financial aid, we offer a three-year evening/weekend intern option for pursuing this degree. In this option, you will be placed into an administrative or academic job as a Graduate Assistant on our university campus, attend evening/weekend classes for three years, and work on a capstone thesis for approximately one year.

  • Meals
  • Health insurance
  • Monthly stipend of $400
  • Status as a Sidha or Governor for at least one year
  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • Excellent English fluency in speaking and writing.
  • A 4-year commitment to the program
  • Recommendations from your National Leader and/or the leader of the Transcendental Meditation® activities in your area

Evening/weekend option

MUM also offers the MA in Maharishi Vedic Science in an evening-weekend format for students with certain backgrounds and qualifications. Read more ➤

In this option, you will attend evening and weekend classes for three years, leaving time for you to continue your job and daily life in the Fairfield community.

This program does not include housing, meals, insurance, or a stipend. Students in need of financial aid should ask their admissions counselor about financial aid options.

Become a teacher of Transcendental Meditation as part of your MA

By pursuing the Teaching Training Course (TTC) track of our MA program, you can train as a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation technique as part of your academic degree.

Career opportunities for teachers exist worldwide through The David Lynch Foundation, which has taught the TM technique to over 120,000 at-risk youth in the U.S. and around the world.

Faculty profile: Thomas Egenes

Dr. Thomas Egenes is Professor of Maharishi Vedic Science and Sanskrit. He earned an MA and PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia; an MA in Higher Education Administration from Maharishi University of Management; and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame.
