Health food is food that has a positive influence on the health of the individual by enlivening the body’s natural intelligence. Health food is free of chemical additives, and minimally processed. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are health foods.
If the food was grown without the use of chemicals (organic produce), then that would be one step closer to an ideal health food, which creates even more harmony and wellbeing in the body.
A diet consisting of mostly organic plant-based foods is beneficial for health and wellness. Such a (vegetarian) diet is an effective way to increase overall vitality of the body and vibrancy of the mind, and helps limit the human impact on Mother Earth. As Albert Einstein said: “Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”
So, eating healthy keeps the planet healthy, but it also brings pleasure to the taste buds. A vegetarian diet can be both exciting and healthy; that is, both delicious and nutritious. There are an infinite number of possible satisfying food combinations available by using all the beautiful colors of vegetables, and flavorful spices and herbs. According to the Maharishi Ayurveda system of health, a diet is satisfying when there is a good combination of the six tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, pungent (hot), and astringent. Great tasting health foods also create positive emotions, and a positive effect on your body—strawberries dipped in dark chocolate is a good example. The anti-oxidant content of the cocoa bean found in dark chocolate can be equal to, or higher than, that of “super fruits” such as blueberry or pomegranate.
“Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food,” said Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. True health food both tastes good and is nourishing to the body as a whole — delicious and nutritious without causing harm. In other words, the intersection of “good tasting” and “wholesome” is crucial for healthy food. The quality of the food affects the taste, the nutritional value, and the consciousness of the individual eating it. The level of food quality defines the level of biological intelligence of the food.
The human body is a dynamic living organism. There is a natural intelligence in the body, which responds and interacts to what we eat. The food you eat today has the ability to influence your genetics — to “switch on” or “switch off” genes. The more healthful qualities, or more intelligence, there is in the food you eat, the more you are maximizing your genetic potential. This has been revealed by the scientific research revealed by epigenetics research. Plant foods are considered more intelligent and energetic food sources because they contain more of the energy of the sun, while animal foods contain a diminished quality of this vital energy.
At Maharishi University of Management, delicious and organic vegetarian meals are provided to all of our students as a component of a natural health approach. This includes vegetables grown using the principles of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture. These vegetables have high nutritional content, enliven the intelligence of the human physiology, expand the consciousness of the individual, and are known to make a person feel great after eating them.
