7 Ways to Improve Detoxification In Your Body

Detoxification is a process of removing toxins, and resting and nourishing the body. The average person is exposed to a variety of toxins from day to day. Air pollution, pesticides in our food, household cleaning products, or even the negative effects of stress in the workplace all can put a toxic burden in the body’s tissues.

Since leading a healthy life is a balancing act, the trick is to counter balance the harmful with the helpful. Stress tends to cause the body to hold on to toxins, while relaxation allows toxins to be released. Here are some practical steps and methods to keeping your body clean and your head clear.

1) Get a Good Sleep
The body’s most powerful time to detoxify is during the night—especially between the hours of 10pm – 2am. During this time, there if no food in the stomach, so the body begins to digest old waste material left behind from previous meals in the day. This is also the period of time when the liver does its maintenance and self-cleaning. This is why it’s so important not to eat snacks before bed, because if you do snack late at night, you are burdening your digestion system for the entire night, and as a result your body does not clean house, and rest is impaired. To avoid eating after 8pm is a moderate approach.

2) Go for a Morning Walk
Even a short 10-20 minute walk to start the day does wonders for the skin. Why? By getting the heart beating a little faster, and the blood moving, a walk helps to move the lymph fluid in the body. Good circulation enables the lymph fluid to reach the body’s eliminations systems for detoxification, and for toxins in the blood to be removed.

3) Transcend Mind Chatter
“Let your mind go, and your body will follow,” is a classic quote from the Hollywood comedy L.A. Story, staring Steve Martin. As it turns out, this is actually true. Allow the mind to settle, and body is allowed to relax. And when the body is relaxed and overall bodily stress is reduced — “voila” — the detoxification channels open. Here’s an easy way to think about it: tension in the body causes the body to hold on to toxins, while relaxation allows for the release of toxins. Let go of your stress, and the toxins release also. Transcendental Meditation is great way to detox from stress, and thus allow the body to detox and heal. “The unique state of restful alertness gained during the Transcendental Meditation® technique promotes health by reducing activation of the sympathetic nervous system—which, in turn, dilates the blood vessels and reduces stress hormones, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol.” (Robert Schneider, M.D., National Institutes of Health funded Medical Researcher) The reduction of stress-hormones allows the body to detoxify easily.

4) Eat Moderately
Overeating contributes to an unneeded toxic load on the body. If you only eat until the stomach is ¾ full it ensures you will digest all of your food. By actually digesting all of your food, you avoid accumulation of excess toxins, and walk away from meals energized.

5) Drink Lemon Water
Fresh lemon (or lime) water cleans the digestive tract by breaking break down old, undigested food particles. It is also full of minerals and vitamin C, which have an alkaline effect on the blood. Simply squeeze a small wedge of lemon into a glass of water, mix with a spoon and enjoy.

6) Self-Massage with Sesame Oil
Lightly massaging the skin with sesame oil in the morning helps remove toxins from the body’s tissues. This comes from the Ayurveda (“life wisdom”), the 5,000 year old system of natural medicine from India. The warm quality of sesame oil penetrates the skin and tissues. The oil then helps to carry the toxins to the digestive system to later be eliminated. For summer months, or if your body tends to “run hot,” use olive or coconut oil instead.

7) Oil Pulling
The method of Oil Pulling also comes from Ayurvedic Medicine, and has gained rapid popularity in recent years due to its positive effectiveness. It involves swishing sesame oil around in the mouth similar to how you would swish mouth wash. The oil “pulls” unwanted toxins from your body as you salivate. After a number of minutes, the golden sesame oil will be a milky white color. The white gunk you spit out is garbage removed from your lymph system.
