As a graduate of the Maharishi Vedic Science program, there’s one question I’ve been asked more often than any other about my choice of study: What is the point of majoring in Maharishi Vedic Science?

My decision to join the Maharishi Vedic Science Masters’ Program came at a time in my life where I was unsure of what I wanted to do next.

I was nearing the end of a traditional 4-year degree in writing and had just started a search for jobs. I know for sure that writing was my passion and I’d enjoyed spending my time in college refining my skills but, in my rush to get work done, I felt I’d missed out on learning about the most important subject: Who I really am.

I’d spent the time I didn’t spend on writing taking classes on Eastern philosophy. Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism–all of it fascinated me. I’d MIU from my mother years ago. I decided to take a look at the website and, once I realized that there was a school where I could major in Vedic philosophy, I was sold. I applied in December, visited in March, and moved to Fairfield that July. I haven’t regretted it for a moment since.

At this point, you may be asking: What is Maharishi Vedic Science? According to the department page:

Maharishi Vedic Science is the science and technology of consciousness… When you study Maharishi Vedic Science you will explore the full range of life and human potential — and the underlying intelligence that administers the entire universe. You’ll also examine how this knowledge can be applied to enrich all fields of knowledge and endeavor.

Maharishi Vedic Science is one of the most popular programs at MIU. It explains the philosophy that underlies Consciousness-Based Education through a series of intensive courses focusing on neuroscience, physics, Sanskrit, the Bhagavad-Gita, government, religion, and even an optional trip to India (which I obviously opted to do!).

One of my favorite things about the program was that, although the students were all from different walks of life and from different countries around the world, the 12 of us quickly bonded over our shared desire to grow and understand the world in new ways. The professors were incredibly supportive and open to any and all questions about their respective topics.

All in all, it was one of the best years of my life. It was like taking a year simply to think: not only about myself but how I am connected to all other things and how they are all connected to each other.

So, the real question: What do you do with this degree? The answer is whatever you want, but better.

Is it practical? Not in the way that many want their degree programs to be practical. I didn’t learn a concrete skill, like business management or computer science. Instead, I learned holistic knowledge that will benefit me in anything that I pursue.

I can’t think of an area of study that could be more far-reaching or practical! Maharishi Vedic Science made me step outside of my current paradigm and understand things in an entirely new light, a skill that will help me at every step of my career and that I will carry for the rest of my life.
