STC, or Science and Technology of Consciousness, is a rite of passage for new Maharishi University of Managment undergraduates. The course details the basics of MIU founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s theories of consciousness and sets up a solid foundation for the Consciousness-Based curriculum to come.

This may all sound serious but, during the final class celebration, the students showed just how fun it can be.

STC is the first class taken by new undergraduates. It is longer than an average MIU class (clocking in at 6 weeks instead of 4) and includes a several-day-long wilderness excursion known as Base Camp. The friends that students make during STC often last for life, and most long-term students can be heard talking about their experiences of the class fondly.

On the last day of class, the students reunited one last time, enjoyed each others’ company, and celebrated their unique talents.

The celebration was made up of a wide variety of performances. One student read a section of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself.” Some students sang original songs, while others performed covers of existing songs that they thought captured the theme of the course. Many of the performances were skits, one of which was based off of the classic story of The Grinch. One student, Kat Kanan, even brought Ayurvedic food to share with the class – including a pitcher of homemade cucumber-mint water.

A highlight of the afternoon was a round of laughing yoga, in which most of the audience participated. Students and professors alike rested on-stage and began a fake laugh. Soon enough, the laughter became authentic. Everybody laughed together for several minutes before returning to their seats for the next performances.

The final performance, much to everybody’s delight, was put on by professor John Collins, who performed an original song to the tune of Mary Poppins’ “A Spoonful of Sugar.” He incorporated many STC terms into the song. John projected the lyrics onto the wall, and the students joined in with the words. At the very end of the show, several students lead the group in singing “Hey Jude” by The Beatles.

“Tonight’s homework will be… nada!” said John Collins, as the students clapped and cheered, “have a great block break!”

On Monday, the students started various new classes and went their separate ways. However, they’ll always have the memories of STC keeping them in each others’ thoughts as they continue through their time at MIU.
