Where are you from and what brought you here to the David Lynch MA?

I am from a very politicized region on the border of Mexico in the US, El Paso, Texas. I was attracted here by some the energy and desire to create great art, and this place allows me that freedom. I’m glad to be in Fairfield, Iowa.

020How are you liking the MA program?

The program had a successful first semester in my opinion, bringing great teachers who inspired and pushed us to our creative limits. It’s great that the program is one year and project based. The program has given me great resources to complete my first feature film, state of the art equipment and comfortable editing facilities. I feel there are some things that could still be expanded, such as the technical support we receive. The faculty is not big enough yet to teach certain parts of production, or post-production that I am interested in. But this has permitted me time to learn these things on my own and develop further skills that can take me far in the industry.

022Are there any teachers who had a particularly strong influence in your studies here so far?

Every time we Skype with our mentor, David Lynch, I feel a rush of creativity and inspiration. He reminds us of the potential we have as artists and to go for what we believe in.

What is your MA thesis film about?

My MA thesis film is a satirical Sci-Fi, based in a near future in a city completely shielded from the exterior where people are absorbed and controlled by a virtual reality system called “DreamLogic.” Someone from the other side of the border hacks into DreamLogic, with plans of freeing everyone from their virtual existence. My film is highly satirical, surreal, political, social and symbolic. It’s a bit sensorial, once people are engaged in a film with their dominant senses (sight and hearing) they can be taken on wild rides to universes unknown.

I am self-learning VFX, 3D Animation and Illustrated animation. Hopefully with these new tools and creative abilities at my hands I will be able to break through into the industry and inspire people to take a stand for what they believe in. Film taught me that growing up. I am also  determined to get more into my music, writing and painting, as they are essential parts to my filmmaking.

What does your future hold?

I always keep in mind that cinema is the universe’s mirror and in it we can see our truths and our flaws. We must keep aspiring to tell stories without precedents, and to inspire and expand people’s consciousness with all that we create!
