Linlin Ye Shi Named National Lean Accounting Student of the Year

Maharishi University of Management PhD candidate Linlin Ye Shi received the 2013 Lean Enterprise Institute’s annual Excellence in Lean Accounting Student Award during their Lean Accounting Summit last month in Orlando, Florida. The Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) is a non-profit educational association which recognizes students who have been actively engaged in research, education, and the development of lean accounting.

Andrew Bargerstock, PhD, CPA, director of MUM’s MBA programs, had nominated Linlin for this award based on her accomplishments in lean accounting. “We are very happy that Linlin’s accomplishments are recognized by Jim Huntzinger, who’s one of the biggest names in lean accounting and who was the chair of the selection committee,” Dr. Bargerstock said. Four MBA Teams Finish in Top 10 of National Business Simulation    
August 11, 2013
MUM placed four MBA teams in the top 10 out of 103 teams in a recent online business decision-making contest run by the international Capsim Foundation Business Simulation.

This achievement marks the fourth consecutive year in which MUM’s MBA accounting students have placed at least one team in the top 10. This year five teams competed from MUM, obtaining first, second, sixth, ninth, and 33rd places. Read more

Alvaro Monasterio - Serving Students as Associate Director of Residential Life

“Alvaro Monasterio is one of our best performing MBA students both in the classroom and in his internship responsibilities as associate director of residential life,” said Andrew Bargerstock, director of the MBA Program at MUM. “He consistently brings both business focus and a friendly personality to whatever he accomplishes. He is exceptionally well-liked among his fellow students and respected highly by all the MBA faculty.”
Patrik Siljestam — Working on MUM's Strategic Plan

MUM student Patrik Siljestam grew up in Skokloster near Stockholm, Sweden. In 2009 he enrolled at MUM to study business. He graduated as Valedictorian in 2011. He is currently pursuing a part-time MBA while working full time as assistant strategic planner in the Office of Expansion. “Everyone from the Board of Trustees to The Higher Learning Commission (MUM’s accrediting association) will see the work that Patrik’s done – expressing the vision of where MUM is going in the next five to thirty years. Not a bad accomplishment for a young business graduate.” After completing his MBA, Patrik plans to pursue a PhD in management at MUM.
Graham Torpey – Assistant Dean of Student Life

Graham became a part-time student and soon started working as associate director of residential life. He graduated in 2012 from the MBA intern program. Graham feels that studying consciousness and sustainability at MUM has given him a more holistic understanding of economics. “I now see the purpose of economics that is yet to be fully enlivened, wherein the discipline can be better utilized to create wealth and well-being for all living systems, including human beings.” Graham said. “I definitely want to work in this area of life, to be an instrument for achieving more enlightened systems.”
Ayako Huang Receives PhD in Management

Ayako Huang, a native of Taiwan, recently earned her doctoral degree in management from Maharishi University of Management. She wanted to build on her experience in school management and combine it with her interest in higher education. For this reason, she chose MUM’s PhD program in management. “I really enjoyed the program,” said Dr. Huang. “Education is my passion and I want to teach management.” She has been a teaching assistant and an instructor in the part-time MBA program while completing her PhD. In the upcoming academic year, she will be a full-time assistant professor in the Department of Business Administration.
MBA Student Teams Sparkle in International Business Simulation

Four MBA teams from Maharishi University of Management (The Chester team placed 3rd in the competition: Laxman Bhandari (Nepal), Visakha Ly (Cambodia), Enkhbat Byambaakhuu (Mongolia), Phirada Khuon (Cambodia), Nan Cao (China)) finished in the top 10 out of 97 MBA teams who participated in the international CAPSIM Foundation Business Simulation during the six-month period ending July 1, 2012. This performance marks the third consecutive year in which MUM’s MBA Accounting students have placed at least one team in the top 10.

Yue Pan — Sharing the Culture of China at MUM

Yue (Mimi) Pan grew up in the city of Lanzhou in northwestern China and attended the Overseas Chinese College (OCC) of the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing. Out of the various programs offered by foreign universities at OCC, she chose MUM’s business program. After meeting some of the MUM faculty, she decided to finish her degree at MUM in Fairfield. Mimi received her BA in business in 2011 and her MBA in 2012.
Third Cousins from China Meet at MUM

Assistant Professor Ye Linlin Shi and MUM administrator Bei Eric Liu both came to MUM in 2008. Although they met briefly in Beijing, they didn’t know each other. It wasn’t until they became friends at MUM that they discovered they were 3rd cousins.
Nikoo Dolati — Accounting Student Secures Job With Local Business

Nikoo Dolati holds a bachelor’s degree in banking and an MA in finance from the University of Tehran, Iran. Nikoo was ranked third nationwide in the uniform entrance exam for her masters degree in Iran. After working in the business and banking sectors for a few years in Tehran, she decided to pursue MUM’s Accounting MBA program. Nikoo now works as senior accountant at iPhone Life Magazine while completing the distance education portion of her degree, and hopes to graduate in June 2013.
MUM Graduates Purchase Established Magazine

Three young entrepreneurs from Fairfield have recently purchased iPhone Life magazine from owner and publisher Hal Goldstein. Mr. Goldstein and his wife Rita, who are MUM alumni, founded Thaddeus Computing in Fairfield 26 years ago. They started iPhone Life magazine in 2008 to cover the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod Touch. Earlier this year, when Mr. Goldstein expressed his desire to retire and potentially sell the magazine, three of his employees were excited to take over. The new company, Mango Life Media consists of CEO David Averbach, who graduated from MUM with a BA in Business in 2007, Editor in Chief Alex Cequea, who received his MBA from MUM in 2010, and CTO Raphael Burnes.
PhD Student Receives Grant and Publishes Article

Manjunath Rao, a PhD candidate at Maharishi University of Management, and his doctoral thesis advisor, Associate Professor Andrew Bargerstock, published a paper in the fall 2011 issue of Management Accounting Quarterly, the refereed online journal of the Institute for Management Accountants (IMA). Last September Mr. Rao was one of two PhD students nationwide to be named Lean Accounting Student of the Year by the Lean Enterprise Institute.
MUM Presents at Academy of Management Conference

MUM faculty, students, and a trustee presented three symposia, one paper, and one professional development workshop at the August 2011 annual conference of the Academy of Management in San Antonio, Texas. 
 
MUM MBA Students Win National Business Competition    
SEPTEMBER 4, 2011
Competing against 137 other MBA teams from universities nationwide, a team of four MBA students from Maharishi University of Management recently placed first in a business simulation competition. The winning team consisted of Ganesh Baniya (Nepal), Abdul Sheikh (Pakistan), Chittaranjan Sahu (India), and Peng Wang (China). In addition, a second team from MUM finished among the top 20 percent.
MUM Offers New Accounting MBA Track

MUM’s Accounting Professionals MBA Program is offering a new track beginning in the fall, 2011. The new track will consist of 11 months of full-time study, but work experience will not be required. Applicants to the new program will be required to have a four-year bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or related area. Based on the students’ academic background in accounting, two new MBA accounting tracks will be offered: Fresh Start and Strong Background.
Adam Hammes — Managing Corporate Sustainability

Adam Hammes is a graduate of MUM’s MBA program who works as manager of sustainability for Kum & Go, L.C., a midwestern convenience store chain headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa. Adam chose MUM’s MBA program because of the University’s strong focus on sustainability and the integration of the Transcendental Meditation® technique into the curriculum. He founded Urban Ambassadors, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental education in the greater Des Moines area.
MBA in Sustainable Business Trains Students for New Green Jobs

MUM’s MBA in Sustainable Business is rolling out a slate of new courses on sustainability. “MUM’s program looks at sustainability in terms of alliance with natural law, so it integrates all other aspects of sustainability. We are trying to understand and pull together the very disparate themes of the sustainability movement,” said Dr. Scott Herriott, co-chair of the business department. MUM’s MBA is one of just six in the country with a dedicated focus on sustainability.
David Nayan — From Business Through Politics to World Peace    
JANUARY 31, 2011
David Nayan was born in Colombia and moved to Fairfield at age eight. He attended Maharishi School and received a B.A. in Business Administration from Maharishi University of Management along with an Outstanding Business Student Award and the first Dr. Tony Nader award. David has always been interested in leadership — he served as student body president both at Maharishi School and MUM. He became a Teacher of the Transcendental Meditation? technique and taught 800 children in the last four years. In 2008 he was presented the MUM Ideal Alumni Award.
