MUM student Kat Kanan has been featured in national media again, this time for her contribution to the Forgotten Iowa photo project.

Kat, a Detroit, Michigan native, is currently a student in our Creative Writing program, which she will be graduating from this summer. During the time that she doesn’t spend in class, doing homework, or managing MUM’s Instagram (@muminstagram) and Snapchat (@maharishisnaps) accounts, she models, writes, and works with her boyfriend Cody Weber on their Forgotten Iowa photography project.

Forgotten Iowa is an ambitious project that plans to capture pictures all 947 towns in Iowa. Over 300 towns are already photographed. Some of these towns have never before been captured on film, are now defunct, or no longer exist on a map. He and Kat are not the first people to have the idea of photographing every Iowa town but, once they are finished, they will be the first to complete the project. Cody calls Forgotten Iowa a “love letter to the state.” You can read more about this project on VICE and CNN.

While Cody focuses on photography, Kat acts as the navigator, discovering old maps and forgotten towns. Research is often intense and requires discovering and poring over old maps to find now-defunct towns. You can see the duo in action photographing the forgotten community of Powdertown on this new Daily VICE video.

Kat was previously featured on an episode of MTV’s “True Life.” You can read about her MTV appearance at our blog on the subject.
