Heather Caldwell, a student in MIU’s Sustainable Living department, has been a busy bee. Ever since taking the Tiny Houses course, Heather has had her sights set on creating a sustainable community for single mothers. “The month-long course covers a plethora of topics ranging from design and materials to building Tiny House Communities and off-grid living,” according to Heather. The first step in making her big Tiny House dream happen was to try it out with her own family.

After a whole lot of planning and networking Heather was able to find a place for her family’s “Micro Mansion”. By utilizing their flexibility and ingenuity they were able to add loft areas, a wood stove, sustainable appliances and are planning to insulate their floor. Their experiment has been a fun one, and it seems to only be growing. The Micro Mansion sits on the recently christened Walton Farms, which is planning to create 2-4 internships for MIU students. The students will cultivate the land and help with other farming projects. It’s a great time to go tiny and stay sustainable!
