Every year, the MIU art department brings in an outside evaluator to review their program. The evaluators are always impressed with the department’s top-notch quality – most recently Susan White, Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Iowa, who rated the program’s 2014-2015 academic year.

Susan said the following of the undergraduate BA program:

“It is clear that the MIU undergraduate BA program has an incredible art faculty that have a clear vision, extraordinary teaching skills and a deep rich knowledge of contemporary and historical art. They are artists/teachers that have taught their students to become strong, inventive, passionate art makers.”

Susan gave the department the highest rating, excellent, on all nearly BA learning objectives, except oral presentations, where it was excellent/very good. Similarly, she had many positive things to say about the BFA program:

“The 2015 BFA exhibition this year is one of the strongest I have seen from an undergraduate program. The students are clear thinking, hard working, collaborative in spirit, as well as very mature young adults. I was impressed with the breadth of each student’s body of work, particularly in thinking about my studio visits with them several months back and then this beautiful new work in their exhibition.”

Susan was also impressed with the authenticity of the student’s artist statements, an area the department focused on improving this year. Susan gave the department the highest rating, excellent, on nearly all BFA learning objectives, except cultivating successful artists, which was excellent/very good.

The BFA graduates reported high satisfaction with their interactions with faculty and other students, and the progress of their art. They described faculty as supportive, challenging, and knowledgeable.
