David Lynch MA in Film Class of 2015

At this time there is uncertainty over the future direction of America. Will it remain a superpower? Will the people’s faith in their government be restored? Will the challenges of creating a sustainable future be met? It seems that everywhere you turn, trust in the establishments of old is crumbling. This program is an oasis where visionary filmmakers can drink deep, replenish, strengthen, learn to wear bliss as a flak jacket, create from a space of clarity, and prepare for the challenges to come. Yes, we believe that our mission is to foster creative voices that can transform the world.

A Vision Quest Into Your Jeweled Interior

A visionary child lives in all of us, and, if you look closely, you’ll find him/her. Maybe, like Lynch, s/he spent a lot of time in the woods growing up, and that’s where you first faced life and death. Fireflies blinking in twilight, alone, he raises a rock and sees worms and critters crawling, and it’s beautiful, because it’s life, even though it’s not shiny. Within him/her, also, the romance of the big city, Los Angeles: the bright lights of possibility, the mysteries of the silver screen, the smell of jasmine at night. Behind the yellow, red, and blue curtains of waking, sleeping, and dreaming, is the round white room of Absolute bliss—our true self—where the big fish live.

DAVID LYNCH Catching the Big Fish, pages 94 – 95

“If you’re an artist, you’ve got to know about anger without being restricted by it. In order to create, you’ve got to have energy; you’ve got to have clarity. You’ve got to be able to catch ideas. You’ve got to be strong enough to fight unbelievable pressure and stress in this world… Bliss is like a flak jacket. It’s a protecting thing. If you have enough bliss, it’s invincibility.”
