Dr. Andrew Bargerstock, Director of MBA Program

A team of MBA students from MIU scored in the 94th percentile in a competitive tournament in integrated decision-making against 1066 master’s degree level teams worldwide. Anthony Illuzzi, client relations consultant with Capsim Management Simulations in Chicago, Illinois, made the announcement on March 14.

The MIU team consisted of Goldy Huang (U.S.), Aashta Gautam (Nepal) and Ganga Karki (Nepal). The students were participating in the competition in Dr. Andrew Bargerstock’s capstone MBA accounting course.

“What we learned about doing business is that you need to think long term,” said Goldy Huang. “Immediate capital gain may be appealing and easy to achieve. However, if a business wants to have a sustainable competitive advantage, the vision must be forward looking.” Goldy also noticed that her practice of the TM-Sidhi program has helped improve her focus significantly.

Over the past five years, MBA teams from MIU have performed at a high level of accomplishment in the Capsim Foundation Simulation. Many teams finished in the top 10th percentile, including three number one finishes worldwide. This year the accounting faculty decided to move to the Capstone version of the simulation because it has about ten times more participants.

Capsim Capstone is an online, interactive simulation where students get the experience of running a business and apply what they have learned in their MBA classes. They also have the opportunity to practice the financial, intellectual, and human skills required for successful business management.

“Students need to utilize their knowledge of marketing, finance, operations, human resources, accounting, problem-solving, and data analysis. We are delighted with the strong finish of the MIU team, which demonstrates world-class capabilities in integrated decision-making,” said Professor Bargerstock.

Other universities that finished in the top 10 include Brigham Young University, Indiana University, Ohio University, Northern Illinois University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and Chandaria School of Business in Kenya.
