MIU alumna Erin Liu

Erin Liu had worked at two of the top international accounting firms, first Deloitte and then PricewaterhouseCoopers. After six years, she decided to take a break and apply to MIU to pursue a graduate degree.
In China, Erin worked as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), helping private companies go public in the US stock market. To be able to serve her clients better, she wanted to become a certified US CPA. She was drawn to MIU’s Accounting Professionals MBA program because it offers training for the CPA certification.

While at MIU, she participated in a Capsim Foundation business simulation competition and her team finished in the top 10th percent. She successfully completed her seven-month on-campus coursework and three months later received a job offer from Friedman LLP, a New York City accounting firm.

She began as a senior auditor, and her employers were so impressed with her performance that within one year they promoted her to audit manager and sponsored her for US permanent residency. Normally this privilege is only offered to new employees after several years of service. She now works as a senior manager, performing audits for companies who are planning their initial public offering.

Erin attributes her quick rise partly to her practice of the Transcendental Meditation® technique, which helps her stay organized and efficient. “If I consider studying at MIU as an investment, the best investment was the TM practice,” she said. “I really enjoy TM and I think it changed my life. My work is stressful and every morning after I arrive at the office I do TM for 20 minutes, and then I feel very alert and fresh.”

Erin recently visited MIU, and brought her husband and her mother to learn the TM® technique. “Every time I come here I feel calm, and people are very nice,” she said. Erin fondly calls the Accounting Professionals MBA administrators her “American moms,” because they welcomed her and helped her when she first arrived and later became her friends.
