Last Saturday night a special yearly fashion show, “EcoJam,” took place in downtown Fairfield, Iowa and some MIU students were involved in putting on the show. Everyone from alumni, current students and prospective students took part in organizing, designing, modeling and attending. Even this month’s MIU Visitors’ Weekend participants were lucky enough to come watch.

One of our David Lynch MFA in film students, Agnes Baginska, showcased the costumes from her thesis film “Last Tree Standing.”  The costumes were designed and built Jami Johnson and Gage Blanton. Agnes’ film is set in a dystopian future and asks the question “The human race cannot survive without nature; does human life matter more than a tree’s life?” which fits into the EcoJam mentality for obvious reasons.

The EcoJam theme for 2015 was sustainability, and the show highlighted the damaging effects of the fashion industry on our poor Earth. This EcoJam focused on water and how many millions of gallons are used every year in the ever-growing industry.

The EcoJam fashion designers each take it upon themselves to create an “eco-friendly” fashion line, which has many interpretations. Some designers mend new outfits from vintage and reusable garments they found in thrift shops and others make their clothes with actual pieces of bark, wood and even some materials you’d find in a trashcan.

But I must say, all these clothes look much better than they sound!
