I've been surrounded by and working with some impressive people here in the past six weeks since my first day at the office. Amongst those people is Steven and I want to share with you his bio today. We're so lucky to have Steven guiding our David Lynch master's in film students on their master's thesis film projects! Steve has over 35 years of experience in production and distribution of live theater, motion pictures and television projects. Steve's experience in distribution covers sales to theatrical exhibitors, television stations, home video distributors and cable companies all over the world, from feature films to half-hour television programs. [caption id="attachment_25180" align="alignleft" width="205"]unnamed Steven and Dolly Parton[/caption] Steve has worked for leading Hollywood distribution companies like Telepictures/Lorimar and RKO Pictures as a salesman. Steve's motion picture and television production experience includes movies with Sean Astin, Powers Boothe, Tom Arnold, Rachael Leigh Cook and Larry Miller in “The Final Season,” as well as movies with Dolly Parton, Valerie Bertinelli, Henry Winkler and Ken Wahl. Steve is currently the President of his own company, Big Schott Enterprises, Inc. In Iowa, Steve has produced a feature film and national, regional and local film commercials, infomercials and videos. One of Steve's favorite quotes: “The producer is the traffic cop at the intersection of Art and Commerce.  You cannot make a financial decision that doesn’t affect the creative approach to making a movie, and you can’t make a creative decision without it affecting the bottom line.”

Laura Bustillos is a documentary filmmaker/visual journalist from the US-Mexico border of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas. She was born less than 10 miles away from US territory, lived her early childhood years in Mexico, and moved to the US with her family when she was 12 years old. [caption id="attachment_25104" align="alignleft" width="200"]IMG_1883 Laura Bustillos[/caption]
Laura grew up in a cultural limbo of nationality and identity, that now highly influences her work. She received a BA with a special recognition in Visual Journalism from Brooks Institute in Ventura, CA. During her time in California, she became aware of the hard work that immigrants are often put through and decided that her work needed to communicate this circumstance.
[caption id="attachment_25105" align="alignright" width="200"]IMG_1916 On Laura's set[/caption] Upon graduation, Laura traveled for half a year to Southern Mexico with the media collective Republic of Light as they documented alternative healing, shamans, and indigenous cultures. She then moved to El Paso, Texas for two years where she worked with local art magazines, musicians, and documented the construction of a baseball stadium in the downtown area of the city.
[caption id="attachment_25106" align="alignleft" width="200"]IMG_1917 Laura filming[/caption] In desperate need of transformation of the border culture she was a part of, Laura came across the David Lynch MA in Film at MUM and immediately knew that it was for her. In August of 2014, she moved to Fairfield where she learned Transcendental Meditation. Almost instantaneously, immigration issues in her life began to solve themselves, and idea breakthroughs came to her in meditation.
[caption id="attachment_25109" align="alignright" width="300"]IMG_1921 Laura doing photography[/caption] Laura is now working on a documentary series called "Undocumented Freedom" which humanizes the "concept" of what it's like to be an undocumented immigrant in the US. She traveled to Phoenix, Arizona and documented the life of "Beto" - a young man who was brought to the U.S. Illegally as a child, was deported at the age of 21, and then ran back across the desert to be reunited with his family in the US. She is currently in the post-production stage of her documentary.

Check out the website for the project where you can also watch "Border Mass" - a short doc about a Catholic mass that happens right on the border fence of the US and Mexico on day of the dead every year. For many, this is the only time of the year when they get to see their family members on the other side. www.undocumentedfreedom.com

Maharishi University of Management’s is launching the new Master’s in Sustainable Living program this fall. The program is based on Deep Sustainabilitysm, a new perspective on what it will take for human civilization to not only persist, but flourish. By learning in both the classroom and out in the field, students will gain the tools needed to lead society toward a brighter, more sustainable future. This program utilizes a “Cohort System”, where students go through a set sequence of courses together as a unit. This allows for deeper study of advanced topics and increased bonding for teamwork. Flexible scheduling allows for courses to last from a few days to six weeks or more. Graduates of the program will have the knowledge, skills, and development of consciousness they need to help design, build, and maintain sustainable communities at the local, regional, national, and global levels. They will gain a broad, high-level education they can utilize in any area of industry or community service and become qualified to join the next generation of leaders in moving our world towards a more sustainable planet. The fields of study that are covered in the MA in Sustainable Living include:
  • Advanced Ecological Design
  • Cultural Competence
  • Holistic Community Development
  • Transformative Entrepreneurship
  • Holistic Social Justice
In the first year, approximately half of the time will be spent in working with professors and experts in the classroom or on field trips. The rest of the time will be spent on semester or year-long local projects co-designed and run by students mentored by faculty and the Project Coordinator. Beginning in the second year, students will have the option to work in the field, gaining valuable knowledge and experience specific to their unique interests. They may also do research oriented work on sustainability. Fieldwork opportunities will be presented to students, or students may design their own project. All work will be guided by a mentor and students will be expected to produce a report or thesis of publishable quality. Learn more about Deep Sustainabilitysm by downloading a free "green paper" written by MUM SL faculty member Dr. David Fisher at the Master's in Sustainable Living webpage!

Flo Bannout, manager of the Sustainable Living department's bike shop, worked with MUM Campus Security to schedule an abandoned bike pickup. With a team that consisted of Rich Dana, Flo and others they were able to pickup 53 bikes around the university's campus! The baseline criteria for choosing the bikes was based on if they had completely rusted chains and 2 flat tires. 20150325_181508The bikes will be held for 10 days. If they are not reported to Campus Security by then, Flo will begin to repair the bikes. The repaired bikes will then be redistributed to students who are in need of them.

By riding a bike instead of driving a car, you can reduce your yearly CO2 emissions by up to 20%! Go green, ride a bike. Contribute even more by building your own DIY Solar Bike Station!

Even though he has given up climbing, his expeditions provide a rich source of dramatic material for his movies. “All my movies are real stories, but I like them to be told in my own unusual way,” he said. Following his Seed Starting workshop, Sascha Kyssa of Naturewise Academy held a workshop about starting and maintaining your own vermicompost. During an initial presentation Sascha gave a comprehensive overview of topics such as worm metrics, worm diet and worm bins. Afterward he gave a demonstration by showing the group one of his own vermicompost bins. The mix of technical knowledge and hands-on interaction made for a fun, dirty, wormy and engaging experience. Learn more about vermicomposting first-hand by enrolling in the BA in Sustainable Living at MUM.
