We are proud to announce that the MUM Green Iowa AmeriCorps team is the winner of Americorps’ Service Year Alliance Higher Education Award for Innovative Campus-Corps Partnership!
The Green Iowa team is based on our campus and supports environmental stewardship throughout Fairfield and Jefferson County, Iowa. Services offered by the team include low-cost residential energy efficiency audits, environmental education programs, and other forms of community engagement.
One of the team’s most notable efforts has been their “Green Graduation” intiative, which has greatly cut down on waste during MUM Commencement activities. In just one year’s time, the team conducted 90 energy audits and weatherizations, organized dozens of educational events, installed over 1,000 LED bulbs, planted 200 trees, and encouraged many volunteers to work on green projects in the community.
MUM and Green Iowa AmeriCorps also worked together to create a certificate program that allows corps members to participate in an 8-week program to earn a Leadership in Sustainability certificate. This program teaches leadership, sustainability, permaculture, and green entrepreneurship skills and connects team members to apprenticeships, work placement, and career opportunities. Corps members end the program with a two and half week field experience on the big island of Hawaii on MUM’s new satellite campus.
Thank you to all who have served on the Green Iowa AmeriCorps team and helped Jefferson County to become a more sustainable place!
