Avishek Ahmed — Making Mobile Apps for Millions of People

Avishek Ahmed began creating mobile applications 10 years ago, even before smartphones appeared on the market, and one of his first apps has been downloaded by seven million people. Avishek grew up in Bangladesh and attended American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), graduating with a BS degree in computer science. Afterwards he worked as a software developer and also taught at AIUB.

In 2011 with a team of four, he entered the Microsoft Imagine Cup in the software design category. He was sitting in his room one night during a blackout and became inspired to create a phone app for the blind. Within a couple of months the team developed a mobile application that makes it possible for the visually impaired to navigate, type, and search the Internet. After several rounds and many challenges, the team won the world final and travelled to New York City to receive the Microsoft People’s Choice Award. Since then, he and his team have entered and won several other software design contests.

Avishek heard about MUM from a friend. He was eager to emulate one of his icons, Steve Jobs, and learn to meditate. When he discovered that at MUM he could learn the Transcendental Meditation® technique and also study software development, he applied immediately. He arrived in February 2015 and just completed eight months of campus coursework. He will be spending his off-campus curricular training as an Android developer at North American Bancard.

He feels that the courses at MUM have significantly improved his software developing skills and the practice of the TM® technique has helped him refresh his brain after the rigorous studying. “In computer programming I have to use my head,” he said. “After that, there is a technique that will calm down my head.”

Avishek hopes to continue designing mobile apps for smartphones and other cutting edge devices such as the Google Glass and virtual reality displays. “My dream from the beginning has been to develop software that will be used by millions of people,” he said.
