Claudia Perez Presents at Renewable Energy Expo
Sustainable Living student Claudia Perez recently participated in a renewable energy expo in Puerto Rico with a presentation titled “Scaling Renewable Energy in Puerto Rico,” part of her senior thesis project.
The expo and the student competition were sponsored by the American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) and Claudia was one of the two Renewable Energy Youth Ambassadors invited to participate with all expenses paid. She presented her project proposal during a special breakfast session to policymakers, investors, and technology experts in the renewable energy field. During the rest of the conference, she shared her plan in the exhibition hall.
In Puerto Rico, only one percent of electricity comes from renewable resources. The high prices of imported coal and oil to generate electricity are causing political, economical, and social distress. Claudia proposed a plan that will provide a long-term solution to the island’s energy challenges and at the same time benefit investors, the environment, and the public.
“MUM gave me the tools to understand the importance of taking into account all areas of sustainability,” said Claudia. “I wanted to create and promote a series of solutions that creates a positive ripple effect in all the areas: the economy, the environment, and society as a whole.”
Claudia grew up in Puerto Rico and has practiced the Transcendental Meditation® technique since childhood. She studied environmental engineering for three semesters, and then she took the opportunity to participate in the Transcendental Meditation Teacher Training Course. When she returned to college, she found her experience less than fulfilling and felt it was time for the deeper experience of Consciousness-BasedSM education at MUM. Claudia completed her studies at MUM in May and received her diploma this December.
Claudia hopes to work in the renewable energy field and is considering a masters degree in the same field. Her long-term goal is to help Puerto Rico become more sustainable.
