Build your portfolio

Whether you’re planning to apply for an MFA or just want to enhance your own studio practice, our program will give you the time and support you need to create a substantial body of quality work and strengthen your creative voice.

Your studio practice will be supported by a rich peer environment, engaging critiques and seminars, and ongoing interaction with experienced, caring faculty and guest artists.

Grow personally and professionally

The program develops practical skills vital to the MFA graduate application process, including writing an artist’s statement, photographing work, the interview process, and more.

You’ll also enjoy a healthy routine, single-living dorm rooms, organic vegetarian meals, and the support of the creative, vibrant community of Fairfield, Iowa.

Meditate and create

As a student at MUM, you’ll practice the Transcendental Meditation technique daily. This evidence-based technique reduces stress, enhances clear thinking, and gets you in touch with the deepest, most authentic part of yourself.

Our students often report that regular meditation helps them be more creative and express their ideas with ease. You’ll notice a difference in your own creative process, too.

Featured guest artists

These prominent artists are visiting in 2017-18 to give lectures and personally critique the work of advanced students.

What our alumni say

Alex Gabriel is a BFA in Art alumnus and currently a graduate student in Art at the University of Iowa. Alex received a tuition scholarship and a paid Teaching Assistantship.

“In the MA in Art when we talk about ideas of aesthetic theory like “moments of being.” I can understand them in terms of my own experience of transcending in Transcendental Meditation. I learned at the strategy of approaching things holistically at MUM, which has helped me connect ideas from class to my studio work. The several months I worked in self-directed studio guided by MUM faculty has helped me feel at home in my studio, be self-motivated, and know how to move through projects with greater ease.”

Kurtis Kujawski graduated from our BFA in Art program after pursuing the Graduate School Preparation track. He has been accepted to the MFA program in ceramics at the Chicago Art Institute with a partial scholarship.

“Students need time to establish the foundation needed to go forward in the art world,” he said, “The extra time thus assisted my acceptance into graduate school.”
