image1Sustainable MBA students Nick and Shuya met and fell in love at Maharishi International University. Shuya grew up in China and got her undergraduate degree in English studies. Wanting to put her new language skills to the test, she enrolled at MIU. There she met Nick, a New Jerseyan whose hectic past of culinary arts, international hospitality management, and psychology led him to the calm lifestyle of MIU. The new MBA students were enrolled in many of the same classes together. Being assigned to the same group for projects laid the foundation for their friendship.

It wasn’t until MIU’s annual Halloween dance that things took a romantic turn. “She asked me to dance,” Nick remembered, “She just looked so happy, full of life and energy when she was hanging out with her friends. I thought, I want to be part of that.” I asked Shuya when she first knew that she liked Nick. She explained how Nick made an effort to bring her chocolate everyday in her Management and Organization class.

When discussing how MIU differs from other schools, Nick said that, “Sustainability and global citizenship didn’t play a part in anything to do with business strategy in the regular business class I took…there wasn’t any mention of sustainability or sourcing of materials. It was all purely finances.” That’s why he was glad to find that MIU had a master’s degree devoted to sustainable business.

One of Shuya’s favorite parts of MIU was the community aspect. “I really enjoyed the Chinese community there. We worked together to put on the show for the spring festival and it was a nice experience. That’s what I miss most right now. I don’t really see Chinese people around this area.” As a foreign student, she was able to get a sense of the US and also have a group of friends that celebrated their home country’s culture.

Since leaving MIU, Shuya and Nick have gotten married. They now have a one-year-old son named Sebastian. Nick is currently working for a high tech company that conducts research and development on the production of semiconductors and other microelectronics. His administrative position puts him in charge of purchasing and procuring necessary materials for the research team. Shuya has been Sebastian’s full time care taker for the past year, but is interested in exploring employment opportunities as he gets older. I enjoyed catching up with these MIU graduates, and am excited to see what they’ll do next.
