Courses

After taking an initial placement test, students are placed in one of four sequenced modules.  Each module has no more than 15 students to ensure that each student receives a high level of personal attention.  These modules are Focus on Listening, Focus on Reading, Focus on Writing and Advanced Integration.   Students are retested every four weeks to see if they are ready for the next module.

Focus on Listening

  • IEP 011 Listening Module 1
  • IEP 012 Listening Module 2
  • IEP 013 Listening Module 3
  • IEP 014 Listening Module 4

Students are exempt from this module if they receive a comprehensive score of 60% or higher on the listening placement test.

During this module, students dedicate most of their class and study time to improving their ability to understand normal spoken English using classroom exercises, movies and audio books. They also improve their reading and speaking abilities during this module. Students repeat this module until they achieve a comprehension score of 60 or higher on the listening placement test.

Prerequisite: Admission to the MUM Intensive English Program.

Focus on Reading

  • IEP 021 Reading Module 1
  • IEP 022 Reading Module 2
  • IEP 023 Reading Module 3
  • IEP 024 Reading Module 4

Students skip this module if they receive a comprehension score of 60 or better on the reading placement test.

Students entering this module have demonstrated that they have achieved an intermediate level of listening skill and are ready to focus on further development of their reading skill in English.

This includes the expansion of their English vocabulary, the development of reading speed and fluency, and the skills and strategies needed to build a complete and accurate understanding of what is read. Classroom discussions of the reading materials and supplementary assignments also contribute to the continued development of listening and speaking skills.

Students repeat this module until they achieve a comprehension score of 60 or better on the reading placement test.

Prerequisite: a comprehension score of 60 or higher on the listening placement test.

Focus on Writing

  • IEP 031 Writing Module 1
  • IEP 032 Writing Module 2
  • IEP 033 Writing Module 3
  • IEP 034 Writing Module 4

Students skip this module if they receive a score of 70 or better on the writing placement test.

Students entering this module have attained an intermediate level of listening and reading ability. The purpose of this module is to develop the student’s ability to write clear, grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs in English. While this is not a composition class, the basic elements of good writing are discussed and practiced. Students continue to develop their vocabulary, reading, listening and speaking abilities in this class.

Students repeat this module until they achieve a passing score on the writing placement test. Depending on enrollment, this module and the reading module may be combined into a single class.

Prerequisite: a comprehension score of 60 on the listening and reading placement tests.

Advanced

  • IEP 041 Advanced Module 1
  • IEP 042 Advanced Module 2
  • IEP 042 Advanced Module 3
  • IEP 044 Advanced Module 4

In the advanced module, students combine the skills of reading, listening, writing, and speaking to develop the level of advanced English and cultural awareness necessary to achieve success in their future academic classes, in a business environment, or in life.

Through the use of authentic materials, students refine their ability to understand college-level lectures, academic and business presentations, read and comprehend college textbooks and newspapers, write college-level essays and official correspondence, give effective presentations, and actively participate in discussions on professional and academic topics.

The number of months a student spends in this module depends on a student’s goals. Students seeking admission to MUM’s academic programs need to achieve a score of 188 or higher on the Compass ESL test of advanced listening and reading and a score of 4.0 or higher on the ESL writing test to exit the program and enroll in academic classes.

Prerequisites: a score of 60 or better on the listening and reading tests and a score of 70 or better on the writing placement test.
