The full significance of the Vedic Literature was brought to light by the sage and scholar, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. By re-organizing its many ancient texts – scattered over
time – and reviving knowledge seemingly without relevance to modern life, Maharishi has drawn technologies from the Vedic Literature that have proven to be of immense practical value—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
By clarifying them in terms of Maharishi Vedic Science, which means clarifying their effectiveness in terms of developing higher states of consciousness in every day life, these technologies now serve to unfold human potential. In a practical way, these technologies bring meaningful answers to those perennial questions that may arise at any stage of life: Who am I? What is the meaning of life? How can I make my life better?
The Transcendental Meditation Technique
Maharishi firstly introduced the practice of the Transcendental Meditation® technique. Its principles are highlighted in his translation and commentary on the Bhagavad-Gītā
, a widely recognized text from the Vedic Literature. In that book, Maharishi shows how the practice of the TM® program can be understood or explained within an intellectual framework that details the nature of reality: a fundamental non-changing, transcendental field of intelligence at the basis of life—pure consciousness—(correlated today with the Unified Field described by quantum physicists) that creates the orderly universe through its own dynamic; and the phenomenal, ever-changing field of relativity, which it underlies. The technique’s ultimate purpose? To provide complete experience of both fields of life.
As TM program practitioners have found, this simple, mental technique effortlessly settles the mind, familiarizing it with its own basis, pure consciousness, experienced as a state of inner restful alertness, devoid of mental activity—Transcendental Consciousness.Repeated experience infuses the mind with energy, creativity, and orderliness. The profound physical rest gained progressively eliminates the stress of modern life. The Vedic Literature predicts, and Maharishi affirms, that in time the individual will sustain this state even during waking, dreaming, and sleeping, which represents a distinct stage in the growth of higher states of consciousness, leading to the full unfolding of human potential—enlightenment.
The TM-¬Sidhi® Program
By probing into more Vedic Literature, Maharishi’s clarification of the Yoga Sūtras of Patanjali provided an advanced technology, the TM-Sidhi program, for those who practice the Transcendental Meditation technique. This advanced technique trains the individual to think and act from the level of Transcendental Consciousness. It establishes a higher level of mind-body integration so that the experience of restful alertness may be maintained during activity. Its purpose? To enhance and accelerate the process of developing higher states of consciousness.
Maharishi’s clarification of other aspects of Vedic Literature, for example, Sthāpatya Veda, Gandharva Veda, and Charak Samhitā, has also led to an array of programs for improving the quality of life, such as: Maharishi VedicSM
architecture for constructing homes and offices that harness positive and nurturing qualities for their occupants; Maharishi Gandharva VedaSM
, for music that promotes integration and harmony in the individual, home, and environment; Maharishi Vedic Approach to HealthSM
, for guidelines that promote disease-free health.
When analyzed, all these technologies, arising from the same source, reveal the same underlying principle. Natural law, the sum total of all the laws of nature, that creates, maintains, and evolves the orderly universe, originates from pure consciousness, a field of intelligence that is directly accessible by the human mind. Alignment of the mind with natural law promotes thoughts, actions, and behavior in accord with the same evolutionary direction displayed in the administration of the universe. Such alignment develops through repeated contact with that field. While Transcendental Meditation and the TM–Sidhi program directly connect the practitioner’s mind with natural law, other programs support such growth. Together, they hasten the individual’s progress through successive higher states of consciousness.
Reading Vedic Literature: a Technology
Maharishi’s elucidation also centers on the very nature of the Vedic Literature itself. His insights reveal that Vedic sounds embody the laws of nature, expressing the inner intelligence of creation. Ancient seers in higher states of consciousness cognized the unmanifest field of intelligence as well as the mechanics by which it gives rise to manifest creation, including the human physiology. Their insights, expressed in speech, form the substance of the Vedic Literature.
Sanskrit, acknowledged by Maharishi as closest to those cognized sounds, was preserved through generations of Vedic families in an oral tradition and subsequently written down.Additionally, the discovery of close correspondences between the respective structures and functions of Vedic literature and the human physiology
by neuro-scientist Dr Tony Nader has brought new significance to reading its texts.Given the potency of Vedic sound and these correspondences, it is possible to see how reading Sanskrit can effect changes in the reader’s consciousness and physiology; hence, the unique program of reading Vedic Literature offered at Maharishi University of Management as an adjunct to the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique.Interestingly, because these effects are attributed to Vedic sound, as research demonstrates, no knowledge of Sanskrit grammar is required—just the ability to read the devanāgarī (Sanskrit script) and correctly produce their corresponding sounds. While the Transcendental Meditation technique takes our attention inward, reading Vedic Literature directs it outward, yet supports the experience of Transcendental Consciousness. The result? Accelerated transformation and enhanced growth. As Maharishi recognized, for too long most of us have lived less than our full human potential. Vedic Literature, the foundation for Maharishi Vedic Science, provides an impressive array of tools to unfold that potential, accelerate us towards enlightenment described by the Vedic Literature, and answer questions about whom we are, or where we are going in our lives.
Dr. Hobbs is Assistant Professor of Maharishi Vedic Science. She earned a B A in English and Law from Keele University, England, and qualified as a Barrister-at-Law in London. Dr Hobbs has taught and practiced law in the private and the public sectors. She earned an MA and Ph.D in Maharishi Vedic Science from Maharishi University of Management. Her dissertation explored an integrated approach to the development of consciousness offered by Maharishi Vedic Science and focused on the value of Vedic sound from reading the Vedic Literature. She is also a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation technique.
