A major in Education with an concentration in educational foundations develops an understanding of the fundamentals of education, with an emphasis on innovative curriculum design and assessment. This major is designed especially for students who are interested in working in educational settings but do not plan to become a classroom teacher. Students who would like to learn how to design educational programs for communities or businesses will find this major provides a strong background of knowledge and skills. The major is appropriate for students who would like to work in after school programs, with community organizations such as a YMCA, or in enrichment programs for young adults. The major or minor can also be useful for students who intend to go into corporate or non-profit settings.
Students who would like to work at the Pre-K or elementary level are encouraged to meet with an advisor in the Education Department to set up a program within the major that focuses on early childhood and elementary education. They can take advantage of courses and internships that give them practical experience working with children in the University’s laboratory school.
