In 1971 Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a sage from the ancient Vedic tradition of knowledge, founded Maharishi International University (later renamed Maharishi University of Management) and developed Consciousness-Based℠ education.

During his life, Maharishi worked with scientists, educators, and Vedic scholars to develop an integrated approach to knowledge, unifying diverse fields of study. He wrote many books and circled the world numerous times, speaking with world leaders and lecturing widely. More than 375 schools in 60 countries around the globe have adopted Maharishi’s approach to education.
In 1973, Maharishi University of Management, then called Maharishi International University (MIU), began offering its first classes in Santa Barbara, California. Before long, MIU had too many students for its small rented facilities, so in 1974 moved to Fairfield, Iowa to the former Parsons College campus. The next several years were a time of rapid expansion. MIU was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, from the Bachelor’s to Doctorate level.

We also celebrate and share our students’ diverse cultures with cultural celebrations throughout the year, including Ethiopian New Year, Chinese New Year, and Diwali, each complete with authentic food, traditional dancing, and on-stage performances.
Many of our students spend their free time making music, filming movies, and collaborating on other creative projects.
At MUM we make sure that students have ample time for exercise, and we provide a wide variety of options, facilities, and resources. Our Recreation Center is a 60,000-square-foot indoor facility, one of the largest of its kind in Iowa, containing a running track, tennis courts basketball courts, rock-climbing wall, and more.

Our campus also offers an outdoor swimming pool, outdoor tennis courts, a dance studio, a soccer field, and a 17-mile loop trail.
More than $32 million in Federal and other grants awarded to date, to the University and to Maharishi University of Management Research Institute in collaboration with leading academic medical centers around the country, for scientific research and academic development.
Includes $26 million from the National Institutes of Health for research on the Transcendental Meditation technique and cardiovascular disease.
Current grant — $4 million from the US Department of Defense for research on the TM program and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in collaboration with the San Diego Veterans Administration Health Center.
