LIT 205 Introduction to Literature and Writing
LIT 497 Literature Senior Thesis
 
To fulfill the requirements for a B.A. in Literature with an Emphasis in Writing, a student chooses a minimum of any 24 credits of upper division writing courses (WTG 200 and above) and the same number of credits from a large selection of literature courses (LIT 300 and above).
 
In addition to the requirements below for the B.A. in Literature with an Emphasis in Writing, students need to satisfy thegeneral requirements for a bachelor’s degree.
    
Creative Writing
 Student Learning Outcomes
Students in Creative Writing (Literature with an Emphasis in Creative Writing) should be able to do the following upon graduation.
  1. Learn the basic elements of poetry: sound, rhythm, image, symbol, metaphor.
  2. Learn the basic elements of fiction: plot, structure, character, point-of-view, setting. 
  3. Learn the basic forms of the non-fiction essay: the memoir, the personal essay, the nature essay, the travel essay.
  4. Look for models in the genre and sub-genres of your interest.
  5. Develop a personal voice and an individual style.
  6. Function in a workshop atmosphere in which you give and receive constructive criticism.
  7. Develop methods of proofing, editing, and revision.
  8. Learn to produce original work in a genre of choice.
  9. Read extensively in the genres that you wish to write.
  10. Develop the professional habits that make professional writers successful.
  11. Engage in a community of artists for inspiration and knowledge of your craft.
  12. Develop a high-minded approach to art founded on the refined consciousness developed through Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation and the TM Sidhi Program.
  13. Write with professional competence.
  14. Write with passion and commitment.
  15. Don’t settle for mediocrity.
