M.A. in Teaching — Secondary Education
Required Course Preparation
When you apply to the M.A. in Teaching, you will need to demonstrate that you have a four-year college degree with a 10-course major in math or the physical or biological sciences. When applying, please submit transcripts to indicate your prior coursework. We evaluate these transcripts as part of your admission to the program. As part of one of these majors you will need to have taken the following:
For mathematics majors:
- Differential Calculus
- Integral Calculus
- Introduction to Computer Programming
- College-level geometry
- Discrete Mathematics
- Linear Algebra
- Probability and Statistics
Plus two other courses in computer science
Plus three other courses in the mathematical sciences or in mathematics
For biology majors:
Option 1: A major in biology, with coursework in
- Plant science (botany)
- Living Systems (college-level introduction to the biological sciences)
- Zoology
- Ecology
- Sustainable Global Environment
- General inorganic chemistry
Option 2: A major in a broad area of science to include 15 semester hour (five courses) in biology, including
- Plant science (botany)
- Living Systems (college-level introduction to the biological sciences)
- Zoology
- Ecology
For art majors:
- art history
- studio courses
- two-dimensional art
- three-dimensional art
For physical science majors
A major in the physical sciences to include coursework in physics, chemistry and earth or space science.
For general science majors
A major in one of the sciences to include coursework in biology, chemistry, and physics.
For business majors
- six semester hours (two courses) in accounting
- six semester hours (two courses) in business law
- computer applications
- consumer studies
For literature majors:
- oral communication
- written communication
- language development
- reading
- American literature
- English literature
- adolescent literature
