M.A. in Teaching — Secondary Education

Preliminary Assessment

The Master of Arts in Teaching is designed to prepare students with any of the following backgrounds to teach in schools in the United States:

  • Math
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • General science
  • American and British literature
  • Art
  • Business

Prior teaching experience is not required. However, many experienced teachers enroll in this program to learn advanced teaching methods.

The purpose of this assessment is to determine if you are eligible for this program. We will let you know immediately if you are eligible to apply after we receive your Preliminary Assessment.

Please note: All information you provide on this form will be verified by the University’s International Admissions office before final acceptance.


1. I have completed a four-year Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution, or a three-year Bachelor’s followed by one or more years of graduate study.    Yes    No

3. Major Field of Study. Please select the field(s) in which you have had college-level training. After selecting the field, please specify the topics of coursework you have taken in this field:

Mathematics: at least 24 semester hours (8 courses), including course-work in the following:
linear algebra or an abstract (modern) algebra
post-calculus geometry
a two course sequence in calculus
computer programming
probability and statistics
discrete mathematics
Biology: at least 24 semester hours (8 courses) in the broad area of science, to include 15 semester hours in biological science, including either:
an eight-course major in biology to include botany, living systems, earth science, and ecology
OR
an eight-course major in the broad area of science to include five courses in biology
 
Physics: Completion of 24 semester hours (8 courses) in physics or 30 semester hours in the broad area of science to include 15 semester hours in physics. I have:
completed 24 semester hours (8 courses) in physics
completed 30 semester hours in the broad area of science which include 15 semester hours in physics
Science — General Science: Completion of 24 semester hours (8 courses) in science to include course work in:
biological science
chemistry
physics
Arts: Completion of 24 semester hours (8 courses) in the field the visual arts, including:
art history
studio courses
two-dimensional art
three-dimensional art
American and British Literature: Completion of at least 24 semester hours (8 courses), to include course work in:
oral communication
written communication
language development
reading
American literature
English literature
adolescent literature
Business: Completion of at least 24 semester hours (8 courses) in business to include:
six semester hours (two courses) in accounting
six semester hours (two courses) in business law
course work in computer applications
course work in consumer studies

4. Grade Point Average. Please make the selection below that includes your grade point average (GPA) in college:

4.0 or above (95 – 100%)
3.0 to 3.99
2.5 to 3.0
2.0 to 2.49
Below 2.0

5. English proficiency. All applicants will be interviewed to assess English proficiency. If you have not had four or more years of instruction completely in English, you will also need to take a standardized test of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS). Applicants with borderline English skills may be asked to take a test even if they have studied in English.

Upon my arrival at the University, I will pay the initial payment to the University of US $18,540 required at the time of enrolling. I also will have an estimated US $2,000 for my personal expenses during my on-campus studies.
