Is MUM right for you?

Holistic and Practical

Is the MUM SL Department the best place for you to learn and grow? We believe that the transition to a more sustainable world involves the work of many different disciplines, expertise, methodologies. Change must occur simultaneously from a number of different levels and on multiple scales. Here are some levels that our program does not specifically cater to along with links to point you in the right direction:

Vocational

Energy, agriculture, architecture, engineer

Is it your desire to do well by doing good? To make a decent, honest living by working with your hands and in doing so slow down or reverse the destructive, exploitative impact of our current technology and infrastructure. The “Green Collar” job sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in our economy. Jobs in areas such as renewable energy, green building, and organic agriculture are growing at an accelerating rate and are tremendously important in moving us towards creating a better world for humanity and all of life on earth. We are not a vocational school and we do not provide you with the necessary skills to take up a green collar job upon graduation without further training. If this is the type of employment that you seek consider that there may be better ways for you to gain those skills than a liberal arts, sustainability education. If you are looking to receive community college style vocational/job training in renewable energy technologies, Iowa Lakes Community College has an excellent program in Wind Energy and Turbine Technology.

Environmental Scientist

The scientific community is pushing innovation in an area that needs very focused training, less breadth but more depth, very specific skill sets and problem-solving ability. Examples include: Pollution monitoring and control, GIS climate monitoring and modeling, earth and soil science, and ecology. Environmental Science is an important field which has made important contributions to all aspects of our lives, and plays a key role in understanding the health of our ecosystems and environment and the possible impacts of our attempts to modify the natural world. Our program does not teach these skills or methodologies in depth but does provide the basic understanding necessary for grounding scientific knowledge in the greater context or system in which problems occur. Without this grounding, many scientifically-based solutions to environmental and social problems lead to the birth of more and greater problems further down the road. If you know that you are interested in a degree program which “prepares students for graduate studies or careers in science, research, or technical fields”, we highly recommend that you check the department of Earth Systems Science at University of California Irvine, but our program is probably not the best fit for you.

Ecovillage

The Global Ecovillage Network describes Ecovillages as communities of “people who strive to integrate a supportive social environment with a low-impact way of life. To achieve this, these ecovillages integrate various aspects of ecological design, permaculture, ecological building, green production, alternative energy, community building practices, and much more.” If this is what you want from your education we strongly recommend that you consider living in an ecovillage for a year or two. Our Sustainable Living program will be here whenever you are ready.

If you’re still following along and feel absolutely sure you want a broader, high-level education in sustainable living then we suggest looking over our department vision to see if we are truly the perfect fit for you.
