A powerful first impression
A few years back I told Maharishi that I was convinced to learn Transcendental Meditation even before he spoke that evening.
First, because of the grace of his movement and the bliss radiating from his personality.
Second, because of the microphone.
After Maharishi was introduced he was given a hand-held microphone to speak into. He liked to talk with his hands, using flowers in his analogies. So he asked for a microphone stand, but was told none was available.
A bouquet of flowers
So he took the bouquet of flowers he had been given, took off the rubber bands holding the flowers together, and put the microphone inside the flowers, and tied it all up with the rubber bands again. Then for the next two hours he spoke into the flowers.
He did this all in a few seconds, while smiling lovingly at the whole crowd in this big hall. He was serene and blissful.
I thought it was such a creative solution, but even more than that, Maharishi’s peaceful, blissful personality created a deep impression on me.
A few years ago I told Maharishi this story, and he said: “Yes, but did you like the lecture”
I said, “Yes, I loved the lecture.”
In the lecture, Maharishi’s message to Australia was simple:
- Within everyone is a treasure—pure silence, Bliss consciousness, a field of peace, of energy and creativity—which is the Self of everyone
- It is the birthright of everyone to experience that, and to live that
- It is easy to experience, through an effortless technique of meditation from the Himalayas
- And Maharishi said, “I can teach you—it is easy to learn this technique in a few days, and begin to enjoy the benefit.
And just like that I learned the technique of Transcendental Meditation from Maharishi at 10 am the next morning.
100 people a Day
Maharishi would teach 100 people a day, just sitting on the bed, while groups of five would receive the whispered instructions from him—each person feeling the incredible peace and warmth and love he emanated.
Then the first group meditation, and sinking down to a level of consciousness never experienced before—so soft, so infinitesimally small somehow, so quiet, so warm—and afterwards being filled with energy, and laughing in a newly joyful kind of way.
The transcript of the talk will be available here soon. If you would like to be notified when the transcript is available please send an e-mail to email@example.com
In the evening Maharishi would check our practice with the whole 100 crammed into a small room, answering every imaginable kind of question. I asked my first question to him then, and his answer was totally unexpected. I realized then that an enlightened teacher is not limited by any normal, small thinking (like mine).
A year later
One year later, in January 1969, at the age of 19, I went to Rishikesh in India on the Ganges bank to Maharishi’s Academy of Meditation to be trained by Maharishi along with 150 others from all over the world as a teacher of Transcendental Meditation.
The 45 years since then have been a thrilling ride. I am so grateful for what he gave to me and to six million others, and for the new golden age of the world now dawning.
