Energy Conservation

The Department of Energy Conservation works to ensure that we make the most efficient use of our precious energy resources. You can contribute significantly to the creative and beneficial use of our valuable resources. Please send your ideas and suggestions to Facilities Management (Box 1149). We all benefit by saving energy.

Energy conservation measures

  • Report Energy Waste overcooling, noisy equipment, or faulty fluorescent light fixtures to the Resident Advisor in the area. Report energy problems for public areas by filling out a work request form at the work request station in the Library Basement, Verrill Hall, the Dreier Building or the Student Union.
  • Lighting incandescent and fluorescent lights) when you are not using them and whenever you leave your room. (Exception: Hallways and stairwells are kept lit for safety.)
  • Water Use hot water only when needed. Be sure to report leaking or running faucets or toilets (or leaking pipes or valves) in a public area to your Resident Advisor or by filling out a work request form at a work request station.

The following guidelines for thermostat settings, heating and cooling, etc., are based on normal conditions; however, when special energy concerns warrant it, special instructions will be posted which will supersede these guidelines:

  • Heating you are leaving your room for more than an hour in the winter, set the thermostat at 60‚ F (16‚ C) (guide mark 2 in North Howard or H&W dormitories). Keep the heating in lobbies and public areas turned off except when used for official campus functions. You can open your windows only if the outside temperature is 65‚F (18‚ C) or higher. For the official Fairfield temperature, dial 601 on a campus phone.
  • Cooling leave your room. Set your thermostat at 78‚ F (26‚ C) or more in summer when you are in your room and 83‚F (28‚ C) when you leave the room. Keep the air conditioning in public areas turned off except when used for official campus functions. You may open your window if the outside temperature is 75‚ F (24‚ C) or less. The official Fairfield temperature can be checked by dialing 601 on campus phones. Personal air conditioners should be removed from windows before October 1.
  • Electricity equipment when not in use. Before leaving your room for program, class, or work, turn off lights and adjust thermostats.
  • Windows times, including nighttime hours. Keep curtains closed as much as possible. Windows may be opened for five minutes morning and evening during the half hour before program. A $15 fine will be issued for any violation of this regulation. (Buildings without air conditioning are exempt from cooling regulations.)
  • Fire Exits energy are wasted when these doors are opened even briefly. Use the energy-efficient double-door exits.

Violations of these guidelines will result in fines to offset the cost of wasted energy. If you have any questions about energy conservation, or wish to report energy waste, please call Facilities Management at ext. 1177.

To conserve energy, many classrooms, meeting halls, and offices on campus are heated and cooled only for the periods they are occupied.
