B.A. in Physiology and Health

What We Teach

The B.A. in Physiology and Health prepares its students to be health educators in the field of prevention of disease and promotion of health. Graduates will be uniquely competent and have comprehensive knowledge of how to prevent disease and promote health according to Maharishi Consciousness-Based Approach to Health. The program includes the following areas of study:

  • Discovery of the Veda and Vedic Literature in human physiology — study of the precise relationship between the structures and functions of human physiology and the fundamental structures of Natural Law contained in the Veda and Vedic Literature.
  • Vedic anatomy and Vedic physiology — study of the expressions of the body’s inner intelligence (the 40 aspects of Veda and the Vedic Literature) with reference to the findings of 150 years of modern scientific research in physiology.
  • Pulse diagnosis — learning to detect balance and imbalance in the body by feeling the pulse.
  • Diet — study of diets that balance and nourish the physiology.
  • Herbal preparations — learning Maharishi Ayurveda® natural herbal preparations that recreate balance on the level of the body’s inner intelligence.
  • Procedures for physiological purification.
  • Health education courses — learning to teach health education courses on Prevention; Self-Pulse Reading; Diet, Digestion, and Nutrition; and Maharishi YogaSM asanas.
  • Vedic Architecture — study of principles for designing and constructing buildings according to Natural Law (Maharishi Sthapatya VedaSM design) so that the building will enhance health.
  • Development of Consciousness — practicing the Transcendental Meditation® and TM-Sidhi® programs to enliven the full creative potential of the student, to give direct experience of the field of intelligence, and to promote deep rest, release of stress, and a high level of mind-body coordination.
  • Reading the Vedic Literature in Sanskrit to culture the fully alert, fully awake state of consciousness, where one thinks and acts spontaneously in accord with Natural Law.
  • Training as patient educators — Students are trained as patient educators. They learn how to explain doctors’ recommendations to patients and to lecture about disease prevention and health promotion.
  • Additional undergraduate study — Students who have not completed an undergraduate degree at the end of the Foundations program will take additional courses in Physiology and Health and general education requirements.
