University Joins Eco-Educational Organizations

As part of the current expansion in the Sustainable Living program and the formation of a new track for sustainable agriculture, the University has become a member of two related eco-educational organizations.

The first is Seed Savers Exchange, which focuses on the preservation of heirloom seeds and plants. Because of extensive breeding of commercial strains, many original varieties of flowers and vegetables and trees are rapidly being lost, as is genetic diversity. Seed savers collects seeds from around the country and the world to preserve this genetic legacy.

The University has also joined Ecology Action the parent organization of the Grow Biointensive organic sustainable gardening and mini-farming method.

"Both organizations are very famous in the field of sustainable agriculture and horticulture," said Sustainable Living faculty member Alex Kachan. "A working partnership with them will be very beneficial for our growing program. Our ultimate goal is to create a truly attractive track in organic sustainable mini-farming at the University that will draw many youth to be the Vedic farmers of America, Canada, and the world. I think we can do it."

The two on-campus greenhouses are now in a process of conversion to the Grow Biointensive method of growing food and soil, which will boost production and nutrient density while reducing inputs and energy use.
