Creative Musical Arts Program
Lessons
MUM is offering individual and group lessons with a number of musicians in our area:
- These lessons are not on the block system. They are structured as a semester-long course, held in addition to the regular blocks, after class.
- Students make arrangements with their lesson teacher to schedule a lesson once a week, usually for a total of 12 hour-long lessons per semester. The lesson courses earn 1 or 1/2 credit per semester, depending on the nature of the course.

How do I sign up for a music lesson course?
You can sign up directly with an instructor. Please view all the options and contact information for Instructors for Ensembles and Private Lessons.
Lessons are offered as semester-based courses after class, open to all students (auditions may be required). A course generally includes 12 lessons, although instructors may vary this structure as needed. There are 2 options, depending on the time students commit to practicing:
- MUS 101 Basic Music Instruction — 30 minutes per day (0.5 credit)
- MUS 201 Intermediate Music Instruction — 1-2 hours per day (1.0 credit)
There is also a lesson course for students who have basic technique and performance experience, and who would like to refine their musicianship, songwriting, and performing skills:
What is the cost of a music lesson course?
Course fees vary according to the instructor. Students who are signed up for at least 2 regular blocks of music courses per semester are eligible to apply for the Creative Musical Arts Lesson Fund, to help subsidize lesson costs for that semester.
Are lessons required for the Creative Musical Arts minor?
Lesson credits count toward the minor but are not required.
Can I request to study with a musician who is not on the list of teachers?
The Creative Musical Arts program carries a list of current lesson teachers. A student who wants to study with an individual who is not on that list may request that this person be considered, but no guarantees can be made. For the lessons to be credit-bearing, such requests must be approved before the beginning of the lesson course, not after.
