Our Mission

The mission of the minor in Creative Musical Arts is to immerse students — beginners as well as trained musicians — in a rich musical experience that facilitates the discovery of their personal, artistic voice.

There are three main components to this mission:

1) CREATIVITY - hands-on, systematic development of creative musical expression

2) CRAFT - training in music theory and fundamentals according to individual skill levels

3) CONSCIOUSNESS – direct experience, understanding, and development of the very source of musicianship: each student’s own, innermost Self.

CREATIVITY, the “House Specialty”
“So, what style of music do you teach?” That is the question we are asked most often. The answer: Our specialization is not defined by a particular musical genre, but by the systematic development of the one faculty which gives rise to all genres: musical creativity. A style is an important expression of one's inner musical voice. We help you discover yours.
This training works well for beginners, but even better for students who are already grounded in a musical style — any style. Imagine collaborating with musicians from backgrounds as diverse as bluegrass banjo and Indian sitar, jazz sax and classical voice, djembe and laptop. Imagine creating your own songs and chants, improvisations and compositions, or video and film scores. If that sounds exciting to you, then Creative Musical Arts is for you.
CRAFT through Hands-On Learning

No matter how creative a musician may be, s/he still needs strong foundational skills in order to express that creativity. Yes, that means theory, ear training and technique.

While conventional schools teach foundational skills as separate subjects, MUM integrates theory and aural skills directly with keyboard improvisation and other hands-on, creative application courses. With this holistic approach of connecting skills to each other, students find that the learning process becomes quite lively and effective.

CONSCIOUSNESS, the Deepest Aspect of Music

Are you interested in exploring that mysterious power of music which is capable of improving health, touching the silent depths of inner being, and even changing the world? Then you've come to the right place. In our music classes, you will embark on a journey that takes you inward, beyond ordinary ways of thinking, to your innermost Self.
You will become well-versed in universal principles of consciousness, study the nature of sound, take a deep look at the impact of sound on the physiology and environment, and unveil the very mechanics that make music “musical.” This combination of profound understanding and personal experience allows you to bring a rich palette of skills and insights to bear on your music, and on all fields of life.

"We rarely hear the inward music, but we're all dancing to it nevertheless."
- Rumi, Persian Muslim poet, jurist, theologian and Sufi mystic, 1207–1273
"All a musician can do is to get closer to the sources of nature, and so feel that he is in communion with the natural laws."
John Coltrane, African-American jazz saxophonist and composer, 1926–1967

"There is the music of heaven in all things and we have forgotten how to hear it until we sing."
- Abbess Hildegard von Bingen, German Christian mystic, composer, healer, and visionary, 1098–1179

"Music is the essence of order and leads to all that is good, just, and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but never less dazzling, passionate, and eternal form."
Plato, Greek philosopher, mathematician and teacher, c. 428 BC–c. 348 BC

"If there is a spirit, music is the thing that wakes it up. And it certainly woke up mine. And it seems to be how we communicate on another level."
- Bono, Irish singer, musician and philanthropist, b. 1960
