film maMaharishi University of Management, a liberal arts school with about 1000 students in Fairfield, Iowa is offering a new one-year Film MA beginning Fall 2013. “This new MA in Filmmaking is specifically designed to give students the training, equipment, time and support to produce major film projects which they can use to launch their careers,” says Professor Gurdy Leete, a professor for the Film MA and co-author of eleven books, mostly about animation.

 

“Students will be able to explore their creativity in an intense studio environment and collaborate with a select group of peers committed to producing significant projects.” Professor Leete continues. “Class sizes will be kept small to guarantee one-on-one teaching and guidance. And faculty members are passionate about their work in film and media arts.”

 

Film MA Faculty

The faculty for the MA in Filmmaking include Stuart Tanner, an acclaimed producer and director of documentary films for BBC, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and more; Professor Leete, whose books have been translated into nine languages; and Cullen Thomas who has won multiple film festival awards and worked with David Lynch Foundation Television as an associate producer.

“Students in the Film MA will have access to a cinema standard RED ONE video camera which produces theater-quality high-resolution,” says Professor Leete. “Plus Canon DSLRs, GoPro cameras, professional microphones, editing suites, film studio, a 175-seat theater with a green screen, and more.”

 

A School Where Everyone Meditates

Maharishi University of Management (MUM) was founded in 1974 as a university where every student does Transcendental Meditation 20 minutes twice a day to reduce stress and increase their creative potential. "By allowing students 20 minutes, twice a day to calm the mind, we find that they can be more creative, less stressed, and get more accomplished during the day." says Professor Leete. Students in Maharishi University’s undergraduate filmmaking program have produced many award-winning films, such as Wormtooth Nation, which was nominated for a Webby award, and currently, The Vindication of Ronald Clay. Why Fairfield?

Fairfield is a unique town in Iowa with about 10,000 residents. So far it has been named one of the “12 Great Places You’ve Never Heard of”  by Mother Earth News, and   “America’s most unusual town” by Oprah Winfrey who did a 1-hour special on Fairfield. From Script to Screen
