Immunity Enhancers

Maharishi Ayurveda has many natural ways to enhance the body's immunity and help prevent the onset of any disease. In this understanding, it is the strength of the host, and not microorganisms that is most important for maintaining good health. If the host is strong, the seeds of disease cannot take hold.

The strength or immunity of the body is called Ojas. This is the balanced inner intelligence of the body that maintains the normal function of all the organ systems. Ojas, or immunity is enhanced greatly by balanced routine, deep meditation, good rest, good diet, regular moderate exercise, and joy.

Especially during the change of season, the body’s internal fire varies significantly. The body fire is called Agni and it is responsible for digestion, metabolism, strength, and maintaining Ojas. During transition to a new season, it is important to take extra rest and adjust diet and routine to the new season. If adjustments are not made, undigested food becomes toxic and blocks the channels, and becomes the ground for infections to take hold. This undigested food material is called ama, and is the cause of many health problems.

Strengthening Agni and Immunity

  • Eat to ¾ of capacity. Do not overeat. Favor soups and light grains and well-cooked vegetables for the last week of a season and the first week of the new season.
  • Sip hot water throughout the day to enhance agni and remove ama.
  • Take immune enhancing digestive spices, cumin, fennel, coriander, turmeric, ginger, pepper.
  • Take regular moderate exercise to 50% of capacity (that is when breathing is heavy and perspiration is significant).
  • Avoid heavy, cold, leftover or stale foods. Avoid ice cold drinks.
  • Maharishi Amrit Kalash is one of the best immune enhancers.
  • If feeling heavy or tired, Elim-Tox is a good herbal formula to help cleanse the channels and remove ama.
  • When the weather gets cold, stay warm. Avoid cold wind, especially on the head. It is good to keep the head covered when outside.
  • Daily oil massage is very helpful for enhancing immunity, especially in the cold weather, especially for people with lighter physiologies.
  • Going to bed extra early is a great immune enhancer, and brings morning clarity that tends to last throughout the day.
  • Enjoy everything. Joy boosts immunity.
