Intensive English Program
The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Maharishi University of Management (MUM) is designed to prepare international students for academic success in any one of MUM's undergraduate or graduate-level programs, as well as professional achievement in an English speaking career after graduation.
As part of the admissions process, all students who are not native speakers of English must submit official scores for either the TOEFL or IELTS standardized English language assessment administered within the previous two years. Scores on the Compass ESL placement test are an acceptable alternative to the TOEFL and IELTS. Please click here for information on minimum test scores required for admission and other admission requirements.
Once students are admitted to the University, those with scores lower than the thresholds listed below will be required to begin their studies at MUM in the IEP to be eligible to enroll in regular academic classes.
Students with these scores must complete the Intensive English Program
- TOEFL: less than 550 paper-based; less than 80 internet-based, less than 213 computer-based
- IELTS: less than 6.0
- Compass ESL: less than 92 listening, 92 reading, 92 grammar/writing
For students pursuing undergraduate study:
- TOEFL: less than 575 paper-based; less than 90 internet-based, less than 232 computer-based
- IELTS: less than 7.0
- Compass ESL: less than 94 Listening, 94 reading, 94 grammar/writing
For students pursuing a graduate degree:
Students with scores higher than those listed above on any one of these tests will not need to enroll in the IEP and may take academic credit classes immediately upon arrival.
All students who are required to enroll in the IEP will have their English level reassessed upon arrival using the Compass ESL test. Pronunciation of spoken English and writing skills will be assessed also. Performance on these assessments will determine the student’s placement within the IEP.
How Long Will I Need to Take English Classes?
The time spent in Intensive English classes will vary depending on a student’s level of English when they arrive, as well as their motivation and natural ability to acquire a new language. Students at a higher level of English upon arrival may need to take only two or three months of Intensive English. Students at a much lower level of English when they arrive may need to spend a full academic year or more developing their English proficiency to the level required for successful academic study.
Classes in the IEP are divided into 4-week blocks. Each student’s English proficiency in reading, listening, writing and pronunciation is assessed at the end of each 4-week block. Based on this assessment, the student will either be required to continue into the next block of Intensive English classes or the student will be allowed to exit the IEP.
