Editing Unified Field Charts in Freehand

Editing and Importing Text

You'll need to change the text in the boxes, some of the text on the right, the name of the discipline, and the Ministry text (a little below the discipline).

To edit text formatting, double-click the text. Select the text and open the Text inspector by choosing Window > Inspectors > Fill. (If you have the Stroke, Object, Fill, or Document panel open, you can just click the Text tab.) Here you can select the font, font style, font size and alignment. The Text panel has its own tabs that let you format paragraphs, spacing, and columns. You should use the Shep font because it includes the diacritical marks for transliterated Sanskrit.

If you change some text in a box and it no longer fits in the box, you can make the font size smaller.

To edit text content, double-click the text, select the text you want to change and type.

To add diacritical marks for transliterated Sanskrit, follow these steps:

For the PC:

  1. Choose Start > Accessories > Character Map to open the Character Map.
  2. In the Font drop-down list, choose Shep. (You must have installed this font first. Click here for instructions.)
  3. Click the character you want. You see it enlarged.
  4. Click Select. You can continue to select other characters.
  5. Click Copy. The characters are copied to the Windows Clipboard.
  6. Return to Freehand. Double-click the text where you want to insert the character(s) and click to place the cursor in the proper place.
  7. Choose Edit > Paste.

For the Mac:

  1. Choose the Apple menu, then Key Caps.
  2. Click one of the keys (ctrl, option, or command ) and the letter for the symbol you want.
  3. Select the symbol that appears in the top text box.
  4. Press Command + C to copy the symbol to the Clipboard.
  5. Return to Freehand and press Command + V to paste the symbol into your Freehand file.

Tip: Instead of Key Caps, Shepley recommends LetraSet or Pop Characters, programs that you can download at www.download.com.

If you find that new text containers automatically expand, but you don't want them to, choose File > Preferences. Click the Text tab and uncheck "New text containers auto-expand."

To import text created in Microsoft Word, you can use one of two methods:

Copy to the clipboard in Word and paste in Freehand: You then have to reformat the text's font, size, and style.

Import a file: You can import an entire file in either RTF or TXT format. (RTF maintains the original formatting, which you probably don't want, if you want to match existing text in the Unified Field Chart.) Follow these steps:

  1. To create a TXT file in Word, choose File > Save As and choose Text Only from the Save as Type drop-down list.
  2. Click Save.
  3. Go to Freehand and choose File > Import and locate the file.
  4. Click Open.
  5. You see a cursor shaped like the top-left corner of a box. Click where you want the top-left corner of the file to appear.
