Using Eudora Light for E-mail
Blocking Spam (Junk Mail) - Creating Filters
You can filter e-mail messages from certain senders. You can automatically move them to another folder, for example. You generally do this when you receive an e-mail message that you want to block. (Note the quick method below for the Mac only.)
- From the menu, choose Tools > Filters (PC) or Window >
Filters (Mac).
- Click New to creat a new filter. (Select an existing filter to edit it.)
- In the Match section of the Filters dialog box, choose if you want to filter incoming or outgoing mail (or both). For blocking spam, check Incoming. To create a manual fulter, click Manual. Then, you need to choose Special > Filter Messages to apply the filter.
- From the Header drop-down list, choose the e-mail message header that you want to match. To block spam, choose From.
- From the next drop-down list, which reads "contains" by default, choose an option. Contains is probably the most common choice.
- In the text box to the right, enter the text you want to filter. For example, if you want to filter e-mails that come from anybody@make$$$.com, you would use the "contains" option and type make$$$.com. Then the filter would affect any e-mails that contain "make$$$.com" in the From header.
- In the Actions section of the dialog box, choose one of the actions from the drop-down list. Eudora Light's option are limited (Eudora Pro has many more), but you can use the Transfer To option. For the PC: On the right, click the button (it probably says In by default). You can then choose from your mailboxes. For example, you could choose Trash. (You can make a special mailbox called Spam for this purpose.) For the Mac: choose a mailbox from the Transfer menu at the top of your screen.
- Click the Close box of the Filters dialog box and click Yes/Save to save the filter.
For the Mac only:
You can also use the quick method. Open a message the contains the header you want, for example, some spam that you don't want to receive any more.
- Choose Special > Make Filter. In the Make Filter dialog box choose Incoming, Outgoing (or both). Choose Manual if you want to apply the filter only when you choose Special > Filter Messages.
- Choose one of the three header options.
- Choose one of the action options. For example, if you have a Spam mailbox, choose Transfer to Existing and choose your Spam mailbox from the Transfer menu at the top of your screen. You could also choose Delete Message which transfers the message to the Trash.
- Click Create Filter.
