Using Outlook Express for E-mail
Blocking Spam (Junk Mail)
You can block e-mail messages from certain senders if you don't want to receive them. Blocked messages do not pass go, do not collect $200, they go directly to your Delete folder. You generally do this when you receive an e-mail message that you want to block.
For the PC:
- To block future e-mails from the same sender as an e-mail you just received, from the Inbox, select the message.
- From the menu, choose Message > Block Sender. (Note that this feature only works for standard POP mail only. It does not apply to HTTP mail (web-based) or IMAP messages.)
- To remove a name from the Blocked Senders list, from the menu choose Tools > Message Rules > Blocked Senders List. Select the name and click Remove.
- To add a new sender to the list, when you don't have a message from that person, choose Tools > Message Rules > Blocked Senders List. Click Add. Enter the information in the dialog box and click OK.
- You can even block an entire domain, for example, all messages from microsoft.com. To do this, use the same procedure for adding a sender to the list, but type just the domain, for example, microsoft.com
Click OK in the Message Rules dialog box to apply rules that have been added or changed.
Note: You can also choose Tools > Message Rules > Mail and create a rule that changes the color of e-mail from certain people or domains or moves them to a specific folder.
For the Mac:
- Choose Tools > Rules.
- Click New.
- Type a name in the Rule Name text box.
- In the If section, choose from the drop-down list. For this purpose, choose Specific Header.
- In the first text box, type From. The drop-down list to the right should say Contains. In the second text box, type the e-mail address or the doman (the part after the @ in an e-mail address) that you want to block.
- In the Then section, choose the action you want from the; drop-down list. To delete the message, choose Delete Message. However, you could also change the message's color or move it to another folder.
- Click OK.
- Close the Mail Rules dialog box.
To disable the rule, choose Tools > Rules and uncheck the Enabled checkbox next to the rule.
