Getting Started with Internet Explorer

Viewing and Saving Files

Viewing Multimedia

The Web supports many formats that allow you to see movies and animation. Many of the formats require that you have a program that plays the format on your hard drive, usually called a player or plug in. Internet Explorer comes with several of these players, but you may not have them if you have an early version of Internet Explorer. Usually, the Web site contains a link to a site where you can download the player, which is always free. A window may pop up automatically, offering you the opportunity to download the player, or the player may download without any choice on your part.

Saving Graphics

You can save graphics from a Web page onto your computer. Move the mouse over the picture and click the right mouse button (PC) or press Ctrl as you click (Mac) . To save the picture click Save Image As (PC) or Download Image to Disk (Mac). In the dialog box, choose the desired location and name for the picture. (Do be careful about copyrighted material, however.)

Saving Files

To save a page on the Internet choose File > Save As from the menu. Choose a folder to save the file in, change the file name if you wish, and click OK.

If you want part of a Web page, follow these steps:

  1. Select the material you want by dragging the mouse across it.
  2. Choose Edit > Copy.
  3. Open another application, such as Microsoft Word.
  4. Choose Edit > Paste. The new application inserts all the text and graphics.
