Managing What's On Your Computer
To manage what's on your computer, you open windows containing lists of what's on your drive and what's in your folders.
- Double-click the Hard Disk icon on your desktop. This icon can be renamed so it may be called anything.(To view the contents of a CD-ROM or a diskette make sure it is inserted.)
- A window appears with all the folders and files stored in that drive.
- To view the contents of a folder double-click it. You then see
the folders and files in that folder.
You can change the view of drives, folders, and files in any window. Choose View from the menu. Choose As Icons, As Buttons, or As List. The List option gives you the most information in the smallest amount of space, shown in the figure. In List view, you can sort the listing by any column just click the column heading.
Selecting files:
- To work with a particular file move the mouse over the file
name and click the left mouse button. This action selects the
file.

- To work with a group of files move the mouse over the first file you want to select and left click. Press and hold down the Shift key as you click additional files to select them.
Creating a new folder:
Create a new folder whenever you want to organize files together.
- Open the drive in which you want to place your folder. (To create a subfolder inside a folder, open the folder in which you want to place your subfolder.)
- From the menu, choose File > New Folder. A new folder appears with the temporary name, untitled folder.
- Type a name for your folder and press Return.
Renaming a file or folder:
- Click the file or folder to select it.
- Type the new name and press Enter.
Moving or copying a file or folder:
- Double-click (open) the drive you want to move the file or folder to.
- If the folder you want to move the file or folder to is not displayed, it is nested inside another folder. Double-click the folder containing the desired folder until it is displayed. (You may need to do this more than once.)
- In the same way, double-click until you see the file or folder you want to move.
- Move the windows so you can see both the file or folder you want to move and the desired destination location.
- To move a file or folder, click and drag the file or folder on top of the desired destination folder. To copy it, press Option as you drag. (You see a small plus next to the mouse cursor.)
- Release the mouse button.
Note: If you try to move a file or folder from one drive to another (for example from your hard drive to a floppy diskette), Mac OS automatically copies it instead of moving it.
Deleting a file or folder:
- Select the file or folder.
Drag
it to the Trash.
Note: If you drag a file or folder to the Trash from a floppy diskette, you cannot retrieve it again.
To restore a deleted file or folder from the Trash:
Double-click
the Trash icon on your desktop.- Select the file or folder you wish to restore.
- Drag the icon to the desired location, for example, your hard drive, desktop or any open folder.
