Installing New Software on the Mac
Installing Software from a CD-ROM
- Press the CD-ROM drive button to open the CD-ROM drive.
- Carefully insert the CD-ROM, label side up in the CD-ROM drive. Make sure it is seated properly and lies flat.
- Press the CD-ROM drive button to close the CD-ROM drive.
- In most cases, a window opens automatically. If no window opens, double-click the CD-ROM's icon on your desktop.
- If there are instructions, such as "Drag this folder to your hard drive," follow the instructions. If there are no instructions, look for a file containing the word "Installer" and double-click that file's icon. You should now see a window showing the files being copied to your Mac's hard drive.
- When you have finished installing the program, carefully remove the CD-ROM from its drive and put it away.
- Have fun with your new program! Start it by finding its icon on your hard drive and double-clicking its icon.
Installing Software that You Downloaded from the Internet
- Once you have found a site that lets you download software you want, follow the instructions on the site. It is helpful to print the instructions before you download so you can have them afterwards.
- During the download, you may see the Download Manager, which lets you know the progress of the download.
- When the download is finished, you see a new file on your desktop. It may include the letters "smi." Double-click this file.
- Follow the directions in the window that opens and the directions that you have from the Web site. Usually, these involve dragging an icon to your hard drive.
