Getting Started with Microsoft Excel
Formatting data
Text and numbers can be formatted much the same as in Microsoft
Word. Select a cell or range of cells and use the formatting toolbar
to change size, font, alignment, and color.
To format numbers:
Excel offers you a great deal of flexibility so you can format a number the way you want. For example, you can format a number in currency (such as dollars), with or without commas, with the number of decimal points you want, as a percent, and so on, as shown in the figure.
To format a number, follow these steps:
- Select a cell or range of cells.
- Choose Format > Cells. You can also press Ctrl + 1 (PC) or
Command (
)
+ 1(Mac).
- Click the Number tab of the Format Cells dialog box.
- Select the number category you want.
- On the right side of the dialog box, choose the options you
want.
- Click OK.
Some number formatting is available on the Formatting toolbar. Click a cell and click the button you want on the Formatting toolbar.
