First Year Program

Base Camp

Integrated into the SCI course is a four-day retreat where students, faculty, and staff go to a wilderness area for a camping trip to help build friendship and understanding between all three groups with the goal of establishing cooperation for future endeavors. Whereas the SCI course enriches the mind and spirit with new ideas about human potential, Base Camp enriches the body and soul, with opportunities to enjoy some beautiful countryside with new friends. Activities include canoeing, biking, and hiking, as well as learning outdoor skills.

On the Current River in the Ozark Mountains first year students and selected faculty/staff come together for 4 days each Fall to canoe, bicycle, and hike their way to understandings and friendships that will last a lifetime. The emphasis is on co-operation and learning new outdoor skills, as well as having some plain old fun.

The Current River is a National Scenic Riverway. The river provides a wilderness environment with lots of trees, caves, cliffs and a spring fed river of clean clear turquoise water.
