Raul Calderon
Raul Calderon earned his first master’s degree in Health Fitness from the Physical Education and Exercise Science Department at the University of Iowa. Subsequently, he earned another master’s and doctorate in Health Psychology from Maharishi University of Management.
Raul was awarded an NIH grant to do his post doctoral training in social and cardiovascular epidemiology at the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention at the Stanford School of Medicine. After Stanford, he continued his research training in adolescent health behavior at the University of Kentucky. He also was the project director of the Family Project/Proyecto La Familia, an NIH study investigating the effects of culture and context on the mental and physical development of Mexican-American children at Arizona State University.
Upon his return to MUM in 2005, Dr. Calderon directed the health and fitness program, where he implemented and evaluated the effectiveness of the University’s health and daily physical activity program, a graduation requirement for all undergraduate students. In 2008, Dr. Calderon became the Director of Evaluations and is helping to monitor and evaluate the intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth and progress of undergraduate students. Last year, Dr. Calderon founded and is directing the Center for the Advancement of Latino Health and Prevention.  This center ties into the community health work he has been doing over the last few years in Jefferson County.  Most recently, Dr. Calderon was contracted by the University of Iowa and the Iowa Cancer Consortium to help develop an infra structure to promote the Iowa Community-Based Cancer Prevention Project.  This is a 3 year project funded by the National Institutes of Health and will most likely make Iowa one of the leading states in the nation which is using a new community participatory research model to address health issues and concerns.
